The engines before 2002 (i think) came with a ko3 turbo and the ones after came with a ko3s turbo which can reach higer figures than the previous with a remap alone. There are also two outputs as standard 150bhp for the early ones and then 180bhp for the later ones which were produced after the 25th anni edition.
They are not amaznigly quick as standard but there is alot of tuning potential and if done right they can look really nice!
I may be converting to a golf sometime soon finances allowing

Yeah ive been a member on there for a while now. Very good forum, i joined because my dad has a 2.0 gti and i was very impressed.
Thanks for the info regarding the engines mate!
Also cheers all for the help!

My A3 Turbo was certainly not slow and the golf has a more aggressive MAP for overtaking.

Exactally. My golf isn't going to be all about speed (to begin with, hehe) its more for the reliability, build quality and the looks. Then when im happy with some little touches on the outside then im going to save for a remap and a few more bits to make it even quicker.
More bothered about the comfort, sound and looks of it right now.
Now its all about finding the right one for me! lol I better get back to searching..

Golf is the best bet then mate.Audi is also more to insure if i remember.
The golf will feel mighty quick enough after your mate so don't worry about that.Remap will unleash a lot more power as long as you don't push it too far.

i dont see peoples obsessions with getting golf 1.8t's. espically people on here, its like everyone is desperatly searching for something better than a vauxhall, and end up buying a vw espically a lardy underpowerd one

The GTI may be slow but IMO the Turbo is not.It might be the best but the engine has so much potential.
The lad is after a well built comfy car.

I didn't say reliable
BUT my mate had a 51 plate TDi one from new and he soon put 80K on it and it still felt brand new and never missed a beat.

TDi.s IMO are a much much better option you dont loose anything performance wise to the 1.8t, and there better at everything else as well

Thing is with the golf and A3, both will cost ££££ when they go wrong. As Jr has said, not as well built as you think. A3 is slow in standard 150bhp terms remap helps but its not lightning quick, still think my VRS is quicker than the remapped A3.

Different kind of power deliver altogether though mate.
IMO there both as quick around town but the VRS would kill it on the m/way.

Oh yeah i know, but it aint quick, mine wasnt and i spent a lot of money on the A3. If he is buying on a budget, its not the right car to buy imo. I shelled out over 700 quid for a new ECU, its a costly car although mpg isnt bad even when remapped.

Thanks for the replys. Thing is i don't know anyone with a golf 1.8 t, thats why im trying to do lots of finding out.
Just need a comfy, good looking an smooth car really, vw's seem to fit the bill well.
Plus if the engine has good potential then it gives me a good enough base for the future to work on improving.
Any better ideas for a new car are very welcome.
I have had a quick look at the 1.9 TDI models, might need to have a better look though if they are a better car. Only thing is i think im still biased towards owning a petrol car even if the diesel has more power.
Best thing next i think is to go and test drive a few.
