Drinking a milshake before you go to the gym will not increase your ability to lift heavier weights ffs

Yes but that tends not to affect those of us that try and understand the science behind it.

Although if you believe by drinking a milkshake you can walk into a gym and lift heavier weights for more reps then good on you.

I said effect of creatine is water retention, hence your muscles look fuller or more bloated.

It can also by a bit harsh on your urological system, kidneys etc if taken for a prolonged period of time in high doses.

Its been a while since i studied sports science and i dont have time to look up and the sports scientists/biologists amongst you might cringe, but in laymans terms.

your muscles store ATP, this is a short term explosive energy store. Sprinters will rely almost entirely on this energy store for the 100 metres, In the average individual this store is thought to be exhausted or rapidly depletes after 10 seconds.

Now the revelence in weight training is that you will be using this same energy delivery system. For example lets say on your final set of bench press you manage 8 reps and then you die, effectively you have just used the ATP energy store in your muscles. After 30 seconds or so this energy store will replenish ready for your next set.

So where does creatine supplementation come in?

Creatine will convert ADP into ATP, thus taking creatine in theory will provide your muscles with increased amounts of ATP. Thus you should be able to train/run a little harder/longer before that energy store depletes.

So how does creatine make you bigger/stronger?

well as I mentioned earlier, water retention is a side effect so this makes your muscles look fuller at the expense of definition.

Now creatine wont directly make you stronger/bigger it will give you more ATP hence short term explosive energy stores to help you train harder so that you get bigger/stronger.

Lets look at a rough example.

Abdul manages 90kg for 8 reps on his heaviest bench set in the gym.

Abdul then begins creatine supplemention and after a week or 2 he manages to bench 90kg for 10 reps instead of his usual 8. The week after he decides to try and up the weight, he then manages to bench 100kg for 8 reps.

hence as a result of his creatine supplementation he is now physically able to bench more weight. This in turn will make him stronger and force his muscles to grow.

This will only come about if you have the mental energy, correct nutrition and training regime. Thus taking creatine does not automatically make you bigger and stronger but it provides resources to help you do so.

Hope that makes sense? difficult to explain without diving into biochemistry.

Good idea Seth, bulbacious balls so big they give you chapped legs when you walk, and you have to waddle along walking like you've shat your pants.

Creatine is designed to push you further... I am currently taking it (on my loading dose atm) I hate the fact that the tablets are huge! (1000mg each) It's says it's purpose is just to push you further and to increase muscle mass!

Side effects are:
- Makes all your odours smell worse
- Your body "May" get addicted to it
