your right they do weigh more, but you look at the extras it comes with, air bags, even the cup has twin air bags, 2ltr engine, mine has climate control (in a cup!) power steering....... this is where the weight is, then compare the weight of a clio cup to a corsa vxr..... 200kg is alot of weight, so compared to most cars the cup is lightweight
My 2.0 Corsa had a full heavy bodykit, smoothed boot, 16" alloys, big brakes front and rear, full sound deadening installed (inc roof, doors, 3/4, pillers, floor etc), it had an airbag, seats that weight 22kg EACH, an exhaust system that weighed a rediculas amount...
1.02 tonners, with 1/2-3/4 tank of juice, oh, and all the chrome, which weighs bloody loads.
Can't compare the 17/182 against a Corsa VXR, compare that against a 192 for weight. Different era of car.
Its all about adding safty zones, crumple zones, strengthed chassis, airbags, sound deadening etc etc..
Just look at small cars. A Fiesta XR2, then a Corsa VXR. REally, they are the same class of car, just developed over 20 years....
Astra weighs 1389kg wet as a comparision to weight of the "superminis" these days. Think the Corsa VXR is around 1200kg.

The minimal weight saving seems to figure. I had a feeling an E46 BMW M3 CSL would be extremely light.
E46 M3 - 1495 kg
M3 CSL - 1460 kg
Pretty shocking difference if you ask me. And on the CSL you get nothing luxurious.
You can only make a car so light before 1) it becomes unsafe 2) before it becomes impractical.

And a carbon roof, no stearo/speakers etc... That isn't much weight saving at all!! :O

Oh, errrrrr, i'll take that with a pinch of salt then. The astras only 100kg less and its a much smaller car (less sound deadening, FWD (So no long driveshaft/rear diff etc)....

Cheers Matt
I'd personally rather crash in the nova than any of the hot hatches mentioned - Welded in rollcage, Bucket seats, Seam-welded shell, FIA-approved harnesses and no bits of interior to trap my limbs or catch fire
The fact that these 'lightweight', hot hatches come with all the toys (air-con, full interior etc) is ridiculous, no wonder they're bloody heavy! If people want a 'compromise' or sound-deadening etc, buy the bloody standard 182 or whatever. Rant over

So you've strengthened crumple zones (designed to take the brunt of the impact) and increased the rigidity of the passenger cell. Nice idea, only your technically substituting broken bones for internal injuries due to the shock of hitting something solid and having no give in the chassis to take up the energy.

Ok no crumple zones as such, but still stuff that's likely to de-form and take some of the energy up in a shunt .

I believe the fibreglass bonnet, wings, boot etc, will all deform somewhat in an accident. Also all this scare mongering about slowing the impact down and internal damage, you'd be surprised how many G's a healthy adult can survive...

When you think about it in comparison to cars of the same era its not really that heavy at all?
I think your compulsion for light weight stripped out cars may be clouding your judgement. Just remember how light the doors, bonnet, tailgate is on my clio
Also due to legislaion and safety standards there is no room or posibility for cars to weigh as little as they did in the past but I think a Clio Cup is a good stab at pushing the health and safety manual towards the bin.

you can't really count them figures on the M3 the csl still comes with climate cd and other gizmos you had to tell them you didn't want them if you wanted the lighter version.
new cars are alot heavier Period good old safety laws saw to that
take the mk5 Golf GTI. ...they increased the kerb weight to 1328kg, about 500kg heavier than the original GTI. ...now thats some weight gain.no wonder the mk1 will sit on the mk5's back end
