I should add that I always negotiate out of contract....wouldn't ever expect a cross grade/upgrade mid term

but mr eddie neglected to tell you that the new customer has to pay £180 for the w960i on that promo plan, whereas an existing may get it cheaper. so the m3 that eddie has that is now only 30k to new customers is actually only a 320 diesel or summat.

Thank you and that's were the problem lies, there is no way to predict a new customer will not fuck you about. At least with a customer who may not go over their quota but pays on time, keep to the full annual tariff and comes back at the end of the year for a new deal with a little incentive is surely better than a new customer who misses payments, bank issues also doesn't use their quota or may overspend a little then fucks off to a rival after 12/18/24 months whatever, because they're after that golden new customer deal. It's a bit poor imo.
However i'm only a humble loyal customer and in no way have access to the networks cost analysis, overheads and proft margins to see if it all pans out which it must as most are in profit each year . Instead we resort to the new customer game and become phone slags and go with any network offering the sweetest deal

when a customer is out of commitment if they need a certain plan we can do things, when they call up midway through a contract and whinge thats when its annoying.

Another thing that pisses me off is the endless leaflet advertising by Sky & Virgin Media, its like there in competition to see who can fill up my bin the quickest. Every fucking week I get at least 2 from each, Im not green or particularly I dont care about saving trees but the amount of paper they must send out offering new customer offers 'hurry offer ends in 2 weeks' is unbelievable, some amount of waste must be generated. If they put as much work into keeping my business & supplying a good well priced service they wouldnt have lost me as a customer in the 1st place. Morons!

Agreed and I only tend to deal with 12 months at a time, there is more emphasis in pushing people into an 18 or 24 contract now with better tariff extras. Was not like that 3-4 years ago. Soon you'll be ties into a 5 year contract in order to get a free phone

you have answered your own question though. someone who religiously spends £30a month we know what they will spend next year. so if in the space of 12 months they spend £360, we know that whatever we give them next we will make another £360-so as a new customer there is always a chance they'll spend more.

I know I answered my own question with regards to being predicatable but there is no way you think new customers will always be more lucrative. If they had any sense they would stick to the contract they think suits them best. I know millions don't but there you go. I've had pretty good deals most of the time don't get me wrong with most networks. It's just the odd time you get caught out

colin-i really do see your point,BUT think like this. you go to bmw and have a m3 or whatever over a 24 month finance agreement. if after 6 months u see the same car offered cheaper and with upgraded alloys, you wouldnt go back to the bmw garage and ask for the same deal would you? no, becuase the market always changing etc.....
if mr eddie came back to vodafone at the end of his contract and said "bubblevaux, ya know what, i have finished my contract and iv seen this offer for new customers, what can ya do?" i would assess his previous spend, and see if it will cost the company more to keep him or loose him, if i can keep him i will, but fact is, there is more money in acquisition than retention.
