Not forgetting...free prescriptions, free dentistry, free meals/uniform/travelcard for the kids, plus they'll pay nursery fees for you if the kids are young.
Hell, throw in a disability to boot and they'll give you £10k for a car
Can you tell I've been reading up on this shit recently?

If you wanted to go to college you could always work on a bar in the evenings so you've got some money....

? no its a step to where he wants to be. Usually people who come out with comments like that are ones that are going no where
i say take the job. Its not always about pay in the begining that will come in time

Funny, the first time I heard it was from an engineer on £60 per hour. Fact is, I did an NVQ myself up to Level 3 and you know how useful it's been? Glass hammer springs to mind.

I did a mechanical apprentiship with my local vauxhall garage and I have some advice for you
Stay clear of any fast fit apprentice positions, as you'll get stuck changing tyres and you WONT enjoy it
Don't take an apprentiship with a main dealer, as that was my downfall, as it's manufacturer specific and if you want to change jobs it could cause you hassle
Do not take the job in the fast fit garage you will as dave said learn nothing of any use to you, they pull young lads in and spit them out, as they pay them bugger all
You dont need 1 year in college before you can work in a garage,. and if a garage has told you that as a stipulation of them employing you just get on with it,
you can also do the same course as a night class at most colleges and it only lasts a few weeks

Oh well, its his choice if he wants to do it, just because you didnt use your qualification after dont mean he wont!

im in an apprenticeship with Arnold Clark
id say they pay their apprentices best out of the lot i applied for. its £120 a week to star with then goes up £100 at least, when you get level 1 done then again level 2 and so on.
also im based at a motorstore so i get to work on all brands of cars which will be useful if i ever want to move to another garage.
they own their own training centre in glasgow that is full of new equipment, cars etc.
i love it, its local, the lads there are sound and the moneys going up
i get to do all sorts of work too not just tyres and crap like that. got a transit engine to do thursday.
i got lucky as i was pretty much dropped in at the deep end as my mentor got sacked about 3 months after me starting so i was on my own with just the foremon checking my stuff but as i had previous knowledge(helped my dad at his work for a few months) they let me get on with servicing and 'proper' jobs straight away.
i do as much if not more than some of the fully qualified techs now
they take on every year and theres branches all over the place, more so in scotland so look out for a vacancy
and yes kwik fit is crap. mate works at a similar place and hates it cause its just tyres and exhausts all the time
