You just need to get on the motorway mate. First time i went on i was a little worried.
Have to drive 500-600 miles a week now just for work.

Motorways are brilliant mate, just don't fall asleep! I went on the motorway the day I passed and it scared me shitless... just a case of taking someone in the car who has more knowledge of motorways and I've loved motorway driving ever since. Stick some decent music on, relax and keep your eyes open and you'll be fine also don't let other people bully you by them going up your arse, take your time!

I passed my test on a friday and was on the m4 the following monday morning and ended up in kingston.
You shouldn't see motorway's as massive obstacles, the first time its a bit nerve racking, but just drive how you would normally, if someones in your way get round them, but then back over to the left, if someone comes to overtake let them, simple stuff

Just get gone and stop worrying about it, it usually takes me 3 hours to get to PVS. I did it in a 1.2 16v the first 2 times with no problems. Also, I wouldn't take your dad. Unless he enjoys getting pissed with a load of idiots in a field.

I feel like and more than happy to give it a go, Have had abit of a set back as I have just spoken with my parents and they came out with the usual stuff "My car isn't going to make it" etc.
But they have said because of my lack of experience they don't think I should give it a try, and Im not going Full stop!
Do you think I should go anyway

I think I should come round & give them a slap & tell them not to be so bloody stupid! Your a grown man, if you want to go on the motorway just do it, & dont ask their permission

It's a concern but it doesn't make it impossible, just means you need to make sure you and the car are up for it.
I went out after I passed a few times up and down a motorway near me just for practice with a parent on board each time. Evening time at first then graduated on to busier times. Then I was happier to do it alone.
Ask your parents if they are prepared to be helpful and do that rather than just rubbish the suggestion of actually going somewhere outside your postcode.
Regarding the car making it, I have a friend commutes from Liverpool to Heathrow every time she flies in a 1 litre, has been doing it for years no bother. Her car is newer but same principle. They don't just blow up because you change counties.
Obviously do the same pre-journey checks as we all will - tyre pressures, oil, water, washer bottle, lights and make sure you in good health and awake and you'll be fine.
It's no small undertaking but really, sort it out. The car and hobby are there for enjoying once you've managed the risks.

I cant understand people saying the motorways scary when you 1st use it. Surely you go on as a passenger prior to doing so yourself & know theres nothing to it? Or does everyone live in the sticks & never leave their own town

I use the motorway every day to go to work, have done so for almost 5yrs. Its a piece of piss!! Dark windy back roads & busy town centers are far more disturbing!

Just to show how insignificant motorways and long journeys are, here's my frist few motorway experiences.
First time, I was driving a work's demo car, didn't have my own car at the time so hadn't done a lot of driving. I was following someone that sort of had an idea of where we were going I didn't have a clue. First I knew that we were going on the motorway was as we left a roundabout and headed down the slip road. Was only on for 1 junction, overtook an L200 cos the bloke I was following wasn't hanging about
Second time, again in a work's demo, it was a 2 hour drive to Nottingham, roughly 50-60 mins on the M6. Had a passenger for this one but it was a collegue who hadn't passed his test yet. Just overtook anything that was in my way, kept an eye out for signs to make sure I knew whereabouts I was and where I was coming off.
Third time was the journey home from Notts at the end of the week, motorway was mad busy, Friday afternoon, was moving at no more than 30 most of the time, in that case it's just like any heavy traffic, just don't get distracted and hit the car infront
Your parents really do need to cut the apron strings

jr - i remember last year when I saw the pictures of the show, i couldn't drive at the time but i still hated not being able to go.
I know for a fact i will hate myself for not going
Ian - my cars just been serviced, all new filters, oil, plugs, new tyres and brakes this year, so I really can't see how it could be better to travel than as it is now.
According to my Old man the nearest motorway is 80 miles away after exeter, I did ask for some help to get my experience up but it was a flat out no.
I understand its going to be one hell of a mission for someone in my shoes, but like you says its not impossible.
Colin - Ive been on a motorway loads of times, I come from Luton so we used to go up there once a month with my Dad driving, and I do work with my Dad from time to time which does invlove alot of motorway driving, so I have seen what its like myself, just never driven it.
Mike B - thanks for the stories mate, I think I need to cut the springs myself

Ive just had another chat with the parents, at first it was like "your 18, we are not stopping you from doing anything, but if you ask for our advice and opinion, then we says its a stupid idea and its NO full stop."
Then it ended up as "Either way I will physically disable your car if I have to"
He said that do I really want to put them under stress over concern. And then played the 'car won't make it' card again.
Thing is a normally take in My Dads advice as hes been there and done it, but for this time I think I will have to bypass his opinion.
He did say if I really badly wanted to go I would have to organise I flight up there but where is the fun in that? I would want to take mine and have it on show if I was going to go.
