Well Im working my way towards an engine transplant. Possibly a 1.6 16v or something. You reckon thats the best way to go then? What price you think I could get a 1.6 16v and gearbox for?

If you want power from a 1L then stick nitrous on it, but it depends how much power you want to make. You could ad silly amounts of nitrous if you dont mind swapping the engine when it goes bang. It may seem like a good idea to tune the 1L because thats all you have at the moment but take it from the guys on here, you wont get the same return on BHP per £ as you would if you swapped the engine. A lot of us have been there and done it

THE ANSWER
port the head
bigger valves
raised rev limiter
better cams
dbilas throttle bodies
after market management
full exhaust with de-cat
mapped to hell
after all that you would maybe get 100bhp
