Good job you sold them
I've got a lot of friends and family who work/worked for Northern Rock who weren't so lucky. One of my close friends father was quite senior at there office in Gosforth had somewhere in the region of £100K in shares wiped out!

Exactly.
People into shares won't bother looking at them for big money making.
Big risks = fun

Share dealings too risky, unless its money your prepared to lose.
I had company ones, from BP. Got them for pretty much 2 for the price of 1. I dont think id bother otherwise.

Rubbish, people make huge money on share dealing.
My Dad's portfolio increased about 30% last year, which is a much better investment than he could of got is most other places - although obviously the risk reflects this.

A customer at work runs a broker and is constantly trying to get me to join up and get wise.
I think he just wants my money but im looking into it as i get older and my grandad was a rich man when he died and 50% of it came from shareholding basically

to be honest, if you dont know stuff and research it or have insider knoweldge, then in the long run you wont make any more money than you would in a bank (look up efficent market hypothesis if you want to know why)
best bet is to invest in a mutual fund and let someone who does know stuff use it

People do make a lot of money buyt they also lose a lot in order to gain, the biggest problem is riding out those bad times and losses... hence why I always say you need to be fairly liquid to seriosuly make money in stocks and shares, and also be able to accept losses liek a gambler

I watched that film about Nick Leeson the other day, it was interesting. It was the one with Ewan McGregor in.

Nick now makes a a mint on the back off his fuck up, he does talks about RISK within a trading firm and how easy it can be to evade it, just like that guy who worked for SecGen proved earlier this year. They can hide all sorts of trades until Risk/Clearing realise they are about 30million long

What are the best online broker's? I am currently reading alot around this topic and am hoping to maybe start trading soon, but for quite small amounts, e.g. £1000 starting fund.
I am hoping to go in to this industry, and was wondering who you work for willay? What you do and how did you get there?

Hhhmm you may get into one of the smaller investment houses if you are lucky but the market is flooded with graduates from the top 5 unis.
Did the degree only cover finance related to property or finance in general?

It is mainly property related, but in my 3rd year I can specialise in some of the more financial modules. Do you work in the industry?

Computing from Bournemouth, worked there for 14 months.
The top 5 uni thing only really applies to the finance related jobs incase you're wondering how I got in from Bournemouth

I would have thought with a degree like that you would be more suited to the development Banks such as Dunbar, Allied Irish or Davenham who are heavily into property development and property acquisitions. However I know alot of people who work for these banks in the NE and they are laying people off left, right and center

As James said the market is flooded at the moment (and always has been tbh) with grads from the top uni's, so if you are going to go that route with your degree then you'll have plenty of hard work and starting from the bottom to get a job at a top firm.
