106 GTi, because if you can't afford a semi decent BMW then don't bother.

Thats like saying if you cant afford a 1.6 sport don't bother, I would rather drive a beemer than a 106, ok it won't be as quick but it is a much better car.

Why is a much better car? Because it's german? a BMW? The 106 is fun, quick-ish, good handling, cheap spares, decent on fuel. BMW is slow, probably older, not nearly as fun to drive, more expensive to repair, probably cost around the same to insure, and probably juicier.

Bit different cars. I'd go for the 106 purely on the basis that I wouldn't buy a petrol BMW that wasn't a 6 cylinder

Exactly, very different cars but for the money I'd take the 106 - more potential too IMO.

The beemer will do abot 36mpg so not exactly juicier, cheaper to insure (for me anyway) and its better built because how many gtis do you see still running at 180,000? my next door neighbour has got a normal 318 on 180 thou and it still drives like its new.
Interior has worn extrememly well.
They might not be the quickest but the 1.9 is as fast as the later vtrs in a straight line.

I love how the 106's and small hatches are always marked as "fun"
Which one would you be having most "fun" sat in traffic in? Beemer or 106?

I sound biased as I am looking at beemers and will probably be getting one.
But I have driven a couple of 106s but only a 1.1 and a quicksilver and I hated both of them, they feel cramped I can never get comfy and the interior looks dated and feels cheap and thats coming from owning a corsa.
Both the 106s I have driven were both unreliable with one being off the road more than it was on it and it only had 50,000 on it, the other one has just snapped a gearbox mount and ripped a hole in the gearbox just from being driven normally.

It's a dam sight more fun than a puny engine in a heavy car. The 318 isn't exactly luxury either is it if we're being honest.

Well I have the facelift 318is with the M44 1.9 16v.
Its a fantastic car, I have had no problems with the car that are not down to wear and tear and its on 130k now.
Cant take a 106 on a drift day can you
Its a pretty frugal engine when driven carefully. I have seen well over 40mpg on a motorway run (I think it was close to 46 but cant be certain)
Its got enough poke to get you into trouble (RWD) if you wanted to partake in anything like that!
But my only advice is to go drive both of them!!! You will see that they are both completely different cars, you will find that one of them is built so solidly and nothing breaks on them and that one of them is a french tin can
If you have any actual questions then don't hesitate to drop me a U2U mate

Depends on the spec list. The only boxes mine didnt have checked at the factory were
Individual
Heated seats
Traction Control
Electric rear quarters
Has everything else though

I've had a shot of one of these old shape beemers everybody loves so much, not sure what engine it was but it certianly wasn't powerfull and you wouldn't be drifting round any roundabouts unless it was a sheet of ice.
Interior was very very dated and I was driving it back from costing a fortune to fix, again.
Depends what you want in a car of course but I wouldn't go near one of these old beemers.

BMW BMW BMW
think, a small hatchback that is badly made, people think you are a plonker.
people say the 106 handles well, yes so do e36's very well made mine has 51% weight distribution at the front and 49% at the back and RWD anyway insurance was the same for my 323i oer a 318is so i would get the 6 cylinder option, also 6 cylinder engines seem to last longer than the 4 pots motors

You need to decide if you want a small nippy hatch or a motorway cruiser really, I've got a 106 GTi, its on 103,000 and is fine

For your age mate, 106 GTi will be quicker, cheaper and more fun yea sure the build quality is a bit shoddy but who cares rattles can be drowned out by a decent system

Christ how different car 2 cars be, ones a motorway mile muncher and the others a B road blaster lol
I just dont understand peoples opinions of the 106 on here (tin can, its french etc) They are just as well built as a corsa IMO, (well the GTi I had was better than the GSI I owned) and it amazes me that if someone posted up a pic of a nova everyuone loves them but lets be honest there total rot boxes as well and flimsy as fook
