My uncle has one rolling roaded at 300bhp. Rebored to 1.9 and a bigger turbo plus a million and one other mods.

Hes had it since new and has had it featured in magazines and done numerous engine changes.

Think he got it in his early 20's and polished it 3times aweek for years. He then had it stored in the garage for around 6years not being used now it just sits on his drive. Its pretty much mint. But they need looking after!

Its pretty much mint and he hasnt had that many problems with it. Altho he only does around 200miles a year!

It use to run hot but he fitted an extra cooling system and added a caravan water pump and its not too bad now. (something like that)

He has a strengthened Focus Rs gearbox and I think that struggles.

Id love it and am always looking around for one but being 18 I cant afford one. As it would HAVE to be a 2nd car as I personally dont think they would be reliable enough. It goes aboslutely mad on boost and thats with the accelerator half way down!

Anyway, heres some pics: (theres a few more in my garage but cba to upload them all)

I had one yeaaaars ago (bout 10? years ago) - was good fun at the time, would get owned by modern hatches though. I had NOS fitted courtesy of AVA in glasgow and blew the engine to smitherines on the M8 a few days later racing an ASTRA GTE (lol) - oh, it grew mushrooms in the boot thanks to a rotten sunroof. Oh, and my mate bought a white one which hes had since (dry stored) and had a 2litre zetec fitted with some other stuff - fairly quick but struggles with my brothers CTR (supercharged) despite putting out similar power. all in all? a rusty money pit thats no quicker than most modern hatches....

I sold my nova XE to buy mine, only for sentimental reasons (I don't even like them!) You could give the nova death everyday and it loved life RST on the other hand has had a fortune spent on it since I've owned it it's had a new bottom end, new head + cam, new gearbox and just had a new turbo Don't get me wrong tho it's a quick old car and would put up a good fight against a lot of modern stuff but it just seems too fragile for everyday motoring

CVH is a dream to work on! you can even do valve stem seals without removing the head.. Love them

I've been helping my mate restore a 90spec Series2, will get some photos of it

Best thing you can do is run the FRST EFi system.. The problem with the mechanical injection system on the ERST is its a bit hit and miss, when you are running lean you dont tend to know about it until the engine goes POP!

this man knows his stuff.

the cvh is one of the easiest units to work on. i took the head off by myself in about and hour. and as said seals can be done without even taking the head off which is a big plus.

all i ever here is people slating reliabilty of them, gets really annoying. if you can find a good example youll be fine and run well.

Grey
76K
Standard apart from boost pipes, powdercoated wheels (RST) and a full stainless.
Absolutely Mint Bodywork/Interior
FSH
TAX
MOT
Dry Stored for the past 6 Years
Never welded
Never Sprayed

What would one be like to live with? (Considering i was thinking of a LET) Are they nippy? Reliability compared to a LET etc.

i always said i would never own a Ford but i quite like these cars tbh

Thanks

Drive it Mike and see how you like it.

The only real weak spot is the gearbox. If you run decent power you'll need frequent rebuilds or something a bit special.

Standard brakes can be a bit vague and the standard steering wheel is horrid.

It will need security up the arse to stop some pikey stealing it though and be prepared to spend every penny you earn on it in an obsessive power hungry compulsion.

an uprated gearbox to handle 300bhp can be had off the shelf here for £550+vat, comes with 12months or 12,000mile warentee on it.

you dont need to fit an ATB to it.

great cars, alot of products out there to make them alot better.

But would a standard engine chew up cogs?

Not normally. Bearings will get noisey eventually. Just down to mileage and use really. A standard rebuild with fresh bearings will normally be around the three hundred quid mark if nothing is damaged beyond repair, plus whatever fitting would be.

For a FWD car they can be very pleasant to potter about in, especially if they are nicely set up and running anything between 160 and 190 bhp with a fresh clutch and set of gearbox bearings. Remarkably civilised.

Mine is quite an animal but below 3,000 rpm and on a nice smooth road is like a little puppy dog.
