I think the actual law states that if it's a private sale, it's sold as seen anyway... I'd explain to the bloke that it's a private sale and sold as seen, and there was no warrenty offered. Explain that you didn't know about the fault (if there even is one), and he should have checked it over properly before handing over the cash.
Be polite and everything, and try and help him resolve it as much as possible, but certainly don't offer a refund unless he has a VERY good point and the bike has fallen apart on him or something!

Either way, put yourself in his shoes... If you bought a bike that is 'faulty' you'd want an answer too...
