But its not though is it  I bought the car with FVSH which is hasn't got because the 80k service wasn't done to the manufactures standards. If it wasn't due a service and they gave it an oil change as a good will gesture then fair enough .But it's the fact they told me it wont need servicing for 20k as the 80k service has just been done. And the service manager agreed so obviously i'm not expecting too much.

Dirt? The black is coke that gets into the oil from combustion, unless the engine is getting tired it should take ages to build up.. There should be no 'dirt' in your engine its SEALED!

I just can't be arsed argueing to be honest and lets be honest you love to be right. Fact is, oil gets dirty quickly.
You are the most patronising person I have met after the complete cunt I work with.
Edit, and before you become even more patronising I realise I haven't met you, but thats the conclusion I have come to

Oil goes black on diesels virtually instantly. Petrol cars don't seem to be as bad. Also there will still be a bit of dirty oil deposits in the engine as u cant ever get 100% of it out.

my astra diesel had service done, drove it the ten miles home and the oil was black again, now i know for a fact it was new, high quality oil that went in, so my engine, which had 5000 miles on it at the time, is a dog
every machine i change the engine oil on, once you have ran it for a little bit then checked the level again it is black, i suppose they are all dogs too?

The dealer was full of shit i got the gsi from, after travelling 100 miles to veiw and making him a list of thing's wrong i saved a grand on the asking price  i also lied about a few thing's which where fine

These people are not mechanics they go by they're own expieriences.
As you like to wave your e-penis about so often during these mechanical threads, you should know that there isn't a problem with the oil being black.
It means it's a decent oil and the dispersant in the oil is working properly, any bigger particles are picked up by the oil filter as you said.
Stop wading in with your verbal diarrhea, it pisses people off, find a better way of getting your point across.
Anyway back on topic.
Black oil is not a good indication that the car has not been serviced for reasons explained above.
