I had an E36 320 and it was pretty underpowered. The E46 318 isn't far off the same power except it sounds so much worse because its four cylinder. E46 328ci are going fairly cheap as they were replaced fairly early on by the 330. The level of refinement of the E46 is much much higher than the E36. My car with 100k miles+ compared to several firends E46 with 100k + showed a lot more wear and tear. Harman kardon audio option is a big plus compared to the standard awful speakers if you go the E46 route. The thing is, if you're talking E46 318ci versus a E36 M3 or M3 cab there should only be one winner if you test drive decent examples. Technoviolet or Estoril M3 cab with polished motorsport wheels
E36 M3 can achieve reasonable mpg too if well looked after and driven lightly (so i've read )

on the e46...
318 is a 2.0 4 cyl
320 is a 2.2 6 cyl
fuel wasnt that different as the 318 is underpowered and you need to give it hard. 6 cyl engines sound much nicer

coupe dervs are hard to find as they only started doing them 2004 if i recall, most are high miles or high priced....looking for a 320d sport convertible at the moment or a 330 if one comes along with less then 40k on the clock for 15 grand

Id recomend going and driving both.Seriously,a 318 shouldnt be on the list with an M3.
318s are slow,M3's on the other hand are not.
Was in my bro's E36 M3 the other day and its the 1st time hes driven it hard when ive been in it and i was pretty shocked.Every gear was a hard shove in the seat when changing up.They have some pull on them and the noise is something else.
Average fuel consumption on the comp was 32mpg and that was with mixed driving.Constant shoe and they sook they fuel.

318 wont cost anything to run, M3 insp2 service will be big bucks (alltho cheaper than a scooby rebuild )
Check the the evo hasnt got a mettalic rattle when you start it up as that means the Vanos is on its way out.
Techno violet ftw.
