Get 2.5" drives, they dont need external power, so you just hide it away anywhere.

You don't, it holds the drives in.
You just screw 4 of the thicker screws into the drive and slide it in til it clicks. Most HP Compaq machines I've had open come with spare screws in the case somewhere.

Sorry for being a moron but how do you access the screws on the other side if that section can't be removed? 
Something tells me I should have bought another USB external and made do.
