If the American's want to keep him locked up - the American's should have him in a US state prison. The cost to the British tax payer will have already been ridiculous in convicting/extraditing/prison charges and now he's ill we'll be landed with medical care bills etc. He (and every other non-UK resident Prisoner) have never contributed to the UK economy yet are being funded by the UK prison system.
I am not in a position to debate wether he should be freed or not as I don't have all the facts

They would have checked his luggage, just like they check everyones luggage when boarding a plane. Not that he'd much stuff, after all, he's been in custody for a while.
