The MP5 is a Heckler and Koch and they use submachine guns not assault rifles dont they.

Pretty sure most HK's had been changed to a higher calibre weapon, as it was decided that if someone was going crazy with a weapon (i.e. pumped up on adrenalin), the 9mm round would penetrate, but not neccessarily stop the person, so a different weapon was bought in to properly take them down in one shot.

Not sure of any units carrying shotguns, unless they are the ones that fire the mini beanbags (similar to mini baton rounds) rather than shells

Jesus wept TinTin

H&K MP5A5 is what is used by the MET. It's a sub machine gun like Harris has said, 9mm is more than enough to stop criminals, especially if the A5 has the 3 shot burst facility, failing that put it on full auto and fill them up with 30 rounds.

I think this is a major step towards all officers being armed. Whether or not we want it, I think its a matter of time.

At least crims might be afraid of the law then.

Yes and no. It might encourage a few more of them to carry guns to 'protect themselves.' It could also mean that coppers are more likely to get shot.

When you go to other European countries where the police carry guns do you not notice that they just seem to command a lot more respect? When I go to Corsica the police just have shoes, trousers, shirt, cuffs, notebook and a glock.. Not like the coppers here who look like they are about to go absailing in the dark.

But in this country, we don't get away with the same sort of things that foreign Police get away with and are much more accountable here, mainly because of things like Human Rights laws, which a lot of other countries perhaps don't pay as much attention to. Theres far too much red tape and bureaucracy here.

For example, the Spanish police will get away with giving someone a bit of a slap or a hiding. Not here.

Funnilly enough we have the same Human Rights laws as the rest of the EU.. Thats where the stupid laws came from.

Yes, I know we have the same human rights laws. But we tend to stick to them a bit more than other countries....

I feel that if all cops over here were to be armed it would encourage more people to get guns and use them in crime

Imagine what would happen to the wee girls they employ these days if they had guns.

A car full of big dudes would just go round taking the guns off them.

I doubt it very much... When everyone had the possibility of getting an F.A.C. and a gun there were far fewer gun crimes than there are today when only criminals have guns. Also there is no real 'threat' for hard-core criminals, they know that the police really cant do anything to them so this just makes it a littler harder for them.

There are also tiny little coppers in the states they dont get their guns nicked off them?

Yes, but things have changed from years ago. Although it was easier to get hold of a gun back then, it wasn't really part of the culture. I can't remember Cliff Richard and the Beatles singing about guns and "poppin a cap in yo' ass"

Its all to do with the culture today, apparently it makes you look hard.

Thank you

And for those that kindly pointed out the the MP5 and G36 are both H&K, please re read my original post

The 9mm is the usual bullet used i agree but the general stopping power of it is what the house of commons are complaining about. There was a case when an armed suspect was shot at by a G36 and the bullet passed straight threw them and into the arm of a passer by Due to this they are on about using a smaller caliber bullet and there fore a less powerful weapon, if any at all. It all comes down to the usual tree hugging pc human rights bastards sticking up for the wrong people.

Your very right, google tells me the same. I'm only passing on the same info i was given by two armed officers whilst visiting the London Eye. They were happily walking along embankment prior to entering the tube station.
