we need a house near a train station as the missus works in westminster
theres a train station round the corner form the parents house, which is why we live here. valued at 360k though, bloody silly money for a normal-ish house.

I was down in Swanwick, houses in general (even though thats within easy commute of London afaik) were about 50k more than comparable in Glasgow.
That's not that much more in % compared to the increased wages.

It's not a piss take though, it'll be in a council estate.
I can find an 84k 3 bedroom house anywhere in the UK, it'll be in what's basically a slum though.

Oh, a 100k house, sorry.
100k gets you a 1 bedroom flat around here, and tbh, barring my street, this place is a dump.

'down in swanwick' ?
That's up north mate. 141 miles from london hardly easy commute.
Check the prices down actually near london. Even outside london e.g. Reading / Windsor / Guildford etc you're not gonna find anywhere near that cheap.
- The place i live now is a 2 bedroom flat in crowthorne, literally you walk in the front door, have a narrow corridor, with 2 bedrooms to the right, my room is tiny... something like 6 foot wide by 10 foot long. I basically just have a little area at the end of my bed where i can get dressed / turn around.
Then we have a small bathroom / shower etc, small kitchen and small lounge on the side of the kitchen. It's tiny, and these flats are selling for £180k. We pay £700 a month in rent and that was one of the cheaper ones we found.
3 bed house ... no chance.
ok here we go...
This is where i work - 'Godalming' (way outside london).

---- ok here's Crowthorne where i am now (not near london, a long commute to work).

I'll admit my Southern England geography is non existant, it's not up north though, any further south and I've had been in France, you must be looking at the wrong place.
The company is full of people on 80k+ so they don't stay in cheap houses.

midlands at best - i'd say it was up north though (north of england).

You clearly didn't get the part about any further south I'd be in France.

85 miles from London, I may be wrong about the commute, I really don't know, just going on what I heard.
Both of you should have known better, do you think I'd say it was that far south if it was in the middle of England

You can keep your London living, cheap houses FTW!!
Although that said, if your moving into major cities to be closer to work then thats tough cheese, if I moved into Aberdeen it would cost on par to buying a place in London!!

I don't really think of anything under 45-50k as 'good pay'.
I'd say 25-35 is 'average'
and 20 or less is below average...
60-100k + is excellent.
... you'll get people saying 'I earn 21k and i live a really good life, loads of money etc...'
but then you find they are from up north and live with their parents and pay no rent... So their 21k after tax goes straight to the disposable income fund.
Where as you could have someone on 35-40k living in london, and their disposable income may be small due to high costs of living / rent / bills / council tax / paying back student loan etc.
remember, when you start earning good money your tax becomes 40%, combined with 9% for student loan and whatever national insurance is, you're potentially handing over more than 50% back ...
So bear that in mind when someone says they earn 50k and you're on 25k, they don't get double what you earn.
[Edited on 12-12-2009 by Paul_J]
How are you working tax out! 50% back that is way off. if you hit ther 40% tax bracket it is only on the earnings over that thresh hold.

John there's plenty of places outside of London with a far easier commute, for example, Reading. We live 1 mile from a station that takes about 30 mins to get into London.
In terms of house prices, I used to live in Glasgow and it's worlds apart in price compared to down here. The work opportunities are so much better though.

sorry paul but i did it im on 25.5k a year and 2 years ago i bought a 3 bed semi ok i have no deposit and i was on a 100% mortgage but i had saved up 7k for a deposit but i was short by little bit as they raised the threshhold from 5% to 7.5% minium deposit at time i was gonna sign over
so i signed for the 100% mortgage and when i moved in i paid the 7k off the mortgage, my mortgage is 110k in northamptonshire midlands..
my mortgage payment is 650 at the moment and im on a repayment mortgage, i currently now owe
about 100.000 dead and i got the house on my own...
since then ive met and G/F and she lives with me now sharing the bills she's on around 20k a year
Fact is its not all ABOUT THE MONEY for me as long as i have enough to have a couple of holidays each year and new cars when we want and decorate the house etc etc etc what more do you need....
i was offered a promotion 3 months ago with a 8k a year pay rise and i turned it down because im happy in my position, in my eyes it just gets to the point where people show off and do things to impress others not to make themselves happy, end of the day i have all i need and can afford all i need.
one of the biggest things which helps me and my mrs is we have no debts no credit cards no loans etc just insurances and the mortgage itself....
