I test drove a 106 gti once worth about £5000 on a garage. I had a little look at the car on the forecourt and asked the vulture of a salesman if there was any chance of a test drive? he walked to the office and threw me the keys then as I was pulling onto the road he handed me some trade plates through the window, told me his name and said 'come find me and let me know what you think when you get back, we'll work something out'.
He had absolutly no info on me, I'd walked to the garage with my gf and I didn't even have to prove I had a licence or anything.
Needless to say I ended up spending about 45 mins in the car and even had to stop to put some more petrol in to get back to the garage.
When I got back I just said I was so long because i'd took it to a mates who knows about gti's and he told me it was a wreck so i'm not interested. You could hear engine ticking from the thrashing i'd gave it and the salesman just gave me a card with his number incase i changed my mind.

So its as simple as that then? Just dont look like a scruffy bastard, and act like im going to buy it.
At the end of the day, i dont mind sitting there whilst he goes through all of the shite, just to say "well yeh, that seems like a good deal, im looking at a civic too so i will give them both a thought"
Reckon its worth giving them a call saying i want to come over, have a look and possibly a little test drive?
The major ball ache is - According to the renault website, the nearest 182 to me is mansfield 2hrs 30 away effort!

I find it impossible to get test drives, I'm not sure why I try doing what everyone says but I just don't get any interest, I just think all salesmen are utter cocks. So what if I'm in a hoody and tracksuit, that doesn't preserve the fact I have more than enough money to buy said car, seems utterly ridiculous.

Me and the ex went into a vauxhall dealership to buy a new vectra Sri and a new astra vxr, so between us nearly £30k to spend. Both knew exactly what we wanted and wanted to buy there and then. I was 21, he was 26, and both wearing jeans, t-shirt etc. Got ignored by all the salesmen which is unusual, actually had the actively seek one out, asked for some advice on the vectra as to whether to get a diesel or a petrol, she looked us up and down and said 'can't help you, come back some other time when you know what you want'! Needless to say we went to a different garage to buy our cars!

Probably depends on value of car...
In the last 3 years in our family we bought loads of cars (Seicento, Corsa, Escort, Hyundai, Rover 25, Pug 206 and a Clio)
Test drove loads more cars without problems, but one cock of a salesman said" i won't let you testdrive it if you don't agree to buy the car now as i don't want you not buying it without a reason..." It was a tidy 206 at decent price and we were really interested... needless to say we went to another garage..
Test drove a 206 with no MOT and TAX as i found out later

A lot of it probably depends on the garage themselves. If they get a lot of people trying it on, they're obviously going to be less inclined to let you out.
I had a similar thing to daymoon though when I bought my Golf. The salesman said I can't let you test drive the car if you're not buying today.
I said theres not a chance I'm going to make up my mind before driving it

as well as the astras at vauxhall, just remembered I took a corsa d 1.3cdti for a spin from motorpoint, the bloke pointed us down some really quite good back roads, lots of fun and got to give it a good thrashing, I very almost bought that one.
Also test drove a mk5 fiesta zetec s from a used car forecourt - me and my mate up front and the bloke from the forecourt in the back - I think the bloke was starting to get scared

I've test driven a few cars lately and sales people know i have no intention of buying them from them, but still let me have a go.
im 21 and bin allowed to test drive
-golf r32 (mk5) - copy of driving license
-brand new tt derv - copy of driving license
-volvo c30 d5 - sweet fa
-mini cooper s (she did how ever check to see if 21 was old enough) - Both parts of the driving license.
but yeah the garage insurance covers you, some places require a copy of the driving license some places dont.

Something similar happened to a guy at work when he went to Audi to buy a near on £30k A4, he had been in for a test drive the week before & left with a brochure to decide on the spec he wanted etc. Returned the following week to order but the guy who took him on the test drive was not interested & kept ignoring him & dealing with other people even though he told him he was their to order so after 1/2hr of standing about he walked out went home phoned the next closest dealer ordered the car over the phone & told them to have it delivered to the garage he was ignored in. Said the look on the guys face was priceless when he went to collect it

Although I bought my current Ibiza from a dealer and had travelled 150miles to look at it, the dealer let me drive it with no questions asked.

Go on autotrader and search the cars you want by "trade only" and see whats closest ignoring price etc.
I found a independent dealer selling a civic type r and clio 182
Drove them both back to back and it confirmed which one I prefered. Would have actually bought the civic from them too as it was a really nice example but they werent been flexable at all on price

When I tested out the Punto I took the car dealers personal car out. It was a bit messy He made a good excuse that it was customer test drivers that made it dirty...

I tend not to judge people on what they wear vs how much money they have. Aaround my way there are a lot of self made men who haven't chabged that much but have the huge house, cars etc
