My 172 was really good on fuel, it's not for sitting at 80 on the motorway though, you're doing about a million rpm by then.

Save a bit more and get a Punto like mattk - the 1.9 one.

It'll still be great on fuel, it'll pull far better than another other small petrol and sit at 80 all day long.

Definitely don't want a 172 or 182, which I was considering

Can you not find an extra £500?

Can get a Fabia vRS for 6k, that fits everything you want and it's also not really boring.

Bet you'd get atleast £500 trade in even from a garage mate!

Punto like that or Corsa C would be best bet IMO. 1.4SRi or the 1.8 if you can stretch to it!

I think the 1.8 will cost too much to run, tbh.

I'm toying with a 1.4 Corsa C, but every time I see a Punto 1.4 16v Sporting, I get all giddy and want one of them.

Just depends how long I can put up with the 12v or if I want to get myself in debt. . .

You say debt like it's a bad thing. There's being out of controllable and there's debt you can easily pay back.

The only thing I'd be worried about is losing my job (redundancy) and not being able to repay it.

To be honest, the Corsa isn't a bad car. They are popular for a reason.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 1.2 imo, the 1.4 isn't that much quicker to warrant any more expense (I have no idea if the 1.4 fetches a bit more)

I know your not a boy racer so I don't think you need much else. Find an Exclusive and I think you will be more than happy with it.
