some it up

was driving, heard what sounded like a boost hoes popping off, then lost power - attempted to boost up again then a loud rattle come from under the bonnet.....

coasted to a stop, looked under the bonnet - oil level fine, but sounded like had no oil in

so get towed home, thinking of what it could be - oil pump gone etc, top end noisy.

started looking for engines too!!!

compression test - fine
took rocker cover off - oil getting to top - fine

started to strip to check tappets etc, found a ramdom bolt laying down by the bottom cover, in the cambelt covers!!! found tensioner slack, not tensioning! then checked timing, was 1.5 teeth out!!! fucking vauxhall moneky who 'rebuilt it' less that a year ago!

so reset the timing, and shes back to normal - the rattling was valves touching pistons!! unbelieve able it didnt bent 16 valves

well that was my saturday night

not really the car's fault is it????? i seem to average 28mpg in my gsi and last year i did a 500 mile day trip and got it upto 38mpg which i think is good considering my friewnd at work cant get 38 out of his 1.8 mondeo doing the same thing with 80 odd bhp less

lucky not to have done more damage there! does the car run fine seen as your only getting 18mpg? mines on 31.3mpg and i dont really drive lightly, when was it last serviced? as your getting boost problems have you changed any of the boost solenoids? does it have the std turbo or a vxr one? the actuar may need adjusting. Are you on AOC? someone on there may be able to help abit more

Well lucky there mate!

I'm still loving mine at the minute, even on standard map!
18MPG is a joke though, I'm averaging about 25-28 and thats a lot of boosting too

If that included everything aswell as both belts with good quality oil then it's not far off.Plugs alone are £60..Engine oil...£60...Gearbox and tranny oil...£70...Cambelt and aux belt kits...£120? Fitting the plugs is a pain in the arse in itself.

£600 for all that ain't too bad but it depends what was used and what got done IMO
