Basically you have 4 attempts to move forward 10 yards. If you dont make it, then they normally take a shot at a field goal (like a conversion in rugby). If you do make the 10yds then you get another 4 attempts. These attempts are called 'downs'. There really isn't much to it tbh. You'll see

Basically...the attacking team has to move the ball 10yards forward from where they gained control of the ball (i.e. from catching from a kick, or through making an opposition player fumble the ball and you getting hold of it), they have to do this within 4 plays though (a play, or down as they'll call it, is basically each time they attempt to move forward either by the quarter back throwing it or by running with it). They'll normally kick it on the final time to get the ball as far away from their end zone as possible.
You'll see something like 2nd and 5 mentioned, the first number is which play it is and the second number is the distance they need to get to make that 10 yards. once they have made that 10 yards the number of plays is reset and they have to make another 10.
OK, so that was very very basic, but its just about all you need to know to understand what you're watching.

They are both known for having a great defence, so was a huge risk to go for it when they could of clawed back a few points.
Its only the 2nd 1/4er, so wasnt like they needed to go hell for leather.
