I wasn't actually just driving along in lane 3.
I was just wondering what rights I have to stay in that lane. as I was was doing the maximum speed you are allowed to do on the motorway.

Lane discipline has nothing to do with speed.
The lane is for overtaking. You can go in there if you're overtaking and you must leave if you're not. It's a fairly simple rule.
Edit to be clearer.
The leftmost lane is for driving in. The lane to the right of that is for overtaking people on the left. Repeat this for the number of lanes of the carriageway.
Either way, stop being a dumbass, deliberate or otherwise. It's in the Highway Code which as you have a driving licence I would hope you're familiar with it.

Whoever told you that is 100% completely incorrect, you are at no time allowed to break the speed limit.

Load of SHITE.
What happens if you hit a person/car while doing this overtaking?
I think John and I have slightly more authority/knowledge in this matter.
At no time in my IAM test, overtaking or not, was I allowed to break the speed limit.

If you were allowed to go faster than the speed limit, surly there would be no point in them

And I did a STOKER of an overtake in a NSL zone in my IAM test, I noticed my examiner watching the speedo with his pen poised!

You would have to be very unlucky to ever get caught going slightly over the limit for an overtake but it's definitely not legal.
Doyle you are a twat.

Only reason I was in the right hand lane was cos I was overtaking... then the car behind would flash.. so I moved back over
