you could have your fun, should you mum let you then sell your vxr in about 2 years time.... just after the astra J vxr is launched and your car will plumet in value... not a good idea mate. Go for something that is cheap already, plenty motors out there that will suit your needs.

But thats just giving up like I've always done
Funny thing is I don't know what she wants exactly. If I move out she looses my money and then lives on her own (younger sister already moved out), don't imagine she actually wants that.
Why don't you just ask her what she wants from you then? May be the easiest way to solve your problem.

tbh, you have really cheap digs at home with your mum.
£175 probably doesn't even cover half the mortgage/rent payments.

my basic is less that that and I manage? Yeah it's hard work, the next year or so will be the hardest for me, but it's worth it

You're a sponge! That would just about cover my council tax!
If you've got the money for a deposit on a house, buy a house! fuck the cars.

I have, and I get a different answer each time. Don't even think she knows.
All thats in her mind is that she doesn't like the idea and will do whatever to try and stop me. Maybe thats right, maybe its being too controlling. I would like to think at 22 I can make my own choices but feel like I'm being backed into a corner I don't want to be in.

Just to clarify (again). I have the deposit, but my salary simply will not allow me to borrow enough. I would need somewhere in the region of £90k to get something worthwhile. That means borrowing £70k, whilst I only earn £17k. Just not going to happen

IF you get the vxr, when you do get a house it will be shite because A: the house prices will be going up soon B: you wont have the money to do it up as you like because you would have less money to spend on it due to petrol/maintanence of your cool fast car.
just my opinion of the matter but because youve justified the car to yourself your method seems ok.

But your living there for cheaply so surely you'd rather have cheaper accommodation than a car which you wont spend THAT much time

It's not being a sponge at all. If thats what his mum charges then so be it. I pay £155 and my rents don't care what I do with my money, so long as they get theirs.

why dont you take out a loan to buy the car, pay it off your wage then keep your savings intact in a 4/5 year bond? ie the term of the loan. would make sense to me... however i still dont agree with what you want to do lol

Yeah, more insurance (lump sum, not a problem), tax is more, and then fuel which will be probably 50% again of what I already spend.
I do see where all you lot are coming from about buying a house by the way, if I could I would and forget the car completely.

Would buying the car hinder your house plans at all?

So, to recap...
You've got an £8.5k car....you want to buy a £10k car and you are paying your mum barely enough money to feed you?
And you have managed to save a £10k deposit for a house in the meantime?
If the above ^^^ is correct, I think you have taken your mums generosity one step too far
No wonder she has put her foot down.

YOu say you have a deposit yeah but if the deposit isn't adequate for the house you are wanting then surely that means you need to be saving more for your deposit and building that to a level that is big enough for you to be able to buy something you want.

Unless my salary doesn't rise the way I expect it to in the next 3/4 years, I don't think it'll change my plans at all.

Yes it is, as his deposit isn't big enough for what he wants, so by taking 1.5k out of that he is heading in the wrong direction.

We don't live a rich life though, and she says she spends under £200 a month on food for the both of us. I'm only at home for a couple of hours in the evenings so basically its half the food, plus a bit of electricity, water and whatever the percentage is of the council tax.
No doubt I am paying less than the cost of living here, but can't be a million miles away from the actual cost to her.

Who really thinks you should be paying 50% of the house costs
That's what parents are for as long as they can afford it.

Just about everybody who has a son/lodger that is going to buy a VXR whilst living near rent free would be my guess May be not 50% but being able to have £20k of money/assets whilst paying less than £50 a week rent is taking the piss somewhat...
