er... I just did it on my watch's stop watch on the way back from college, 50-80 took 9.85 seconds...
To be fair coz of the close ratio gear box 50 mph in 4th = 3.1k RPM hehe...
Not bad for a 1.2 16v SXI tho... (note my times are approx since I found it slightly hard driving, looking at speedo, looking at stopwatch and sync'ing them EXACT!)

do you go at a steady speed of 50, then start timer and accelerate to 80,
or do you go from say 40, accelerating hard, then when u hit 50 , then start the timer ?

Intresting to see what the 1.6 16v and 1.4 16v owners will get, but I thought my in gear times would be a hell of a lot faster than N/A cars.

Get to 50mph hold the speed and floor it until you get to 80 and stop the clock.

Just for you ollie i went out at lunchtime and found the flattest piece of dual carriage way i mean track that i could
50-80 in 4th
RUN 1 = 9.3
RUN 2 = 9.0
RUN 3 = 9.1
at 50mph in 4th my revs are only @ 2200 though 
did some 30-70 through the gears as well
RUN 1 = 6.5
RUN 2 = 6.7
RUN 3 = 6.3
30-120 was bloody quick but i was fighting to keep the car on the track due to the high winds so didnt get time properly

Rolling in 2nd @ 30 mph, boot it then changed up at 62 and onwards to 70. Gearbox doesnt like be rushed though
another good test would be a 0-100, lol might go back to the *Ahem* track and try it 
I think we should have some of the 2.0 corsa times, will be interesting

30-70 in seconds, another good place for my GT, loads of torque
0-100 is a bit harder to do as people can cheat.

well firstly I said 9.85 - thats closer to 10 than what you said which was closer to 9...
secondly, I'm sure a lot of the bigger engine'd cars will have quite slow times for the fact they're geared so they are sitting at like 2.2k RPM in 4th...
if I try to pull away at 2k RPM It takes me about 15 seconds just to get the needle to 3k RPM!!! - its at 3.5K RPM it really rockets away...
and since its at 3.1K as I start the timer - it's pretty nippy in comparision to some others...
Was 8 seconds the best you can do? I would of thought a GT Turbo could do better...

thats exactly it... in my car 4th gear is in the power at 50... Thats why my Sxi is looking to be 'faster' than it should be here...
my 3rd gear doesn't even go to 80 hehe...
