I have a netbook and ipad and for just going on the internet/facebook/emails etc my Ipad is a lot better.
Netbooks can get hot like any laptop so cant just leave them on a cushion or bed.also usually have to be plugged in most of the time as my netbook battery only lasts 2/3 hrs. Netbooks do go on standby etc but does seem easier somehow having the Ipad always on and ready, much like your mobile phone.
In regards to features my netbook running windows 7 will obviously kick its arse on functionality but i would deffo prefer to read the times on my ipad than holding a netbook. They really are different devices to compare. I use my ipad for games/music/ browsing etc and my desktop for anything else. The netbook hasnt been switched on in months now.
I also dont think either device is ultimately portable, both are highly susceptible to damage when in a bag, and like netbooks the iPad has many hard protective cases
The ipad "obey" image really is pathetic, i didn't buy it to obey, I bought it because its the first well presented tablet/gadget.
Ed, your completely right it really needs the new IOS soon.

how easy is it to read the ipad outdoors?
I'm considering getting a new kindle to read e books on (As I can download pirate ebooks for free ) - i would love to sit in the garden reading them.

Course you obeyed, I'm betting you have an iphone and an ipod too. It's hardly the first tablet on the planet is it and 'well presented' is a matter of opinion.

Paul: I've heard that they are really bad in direct light from pilots who wanted to use them to display charts. A couple decided to use Kindles instead, but then you loose the extra iPad functionality. Will be interesting to see what the competition come up with, aren't there meant to be Android devices made by Asus and the likes coming soon?

that's right i do have a Iphone too, as I was that impressed with that I knew i would like the iPad.
Ed, that does look good.
Also its a shame, like with the iPhone copies its only now that decent tablets are coming out.
You must be right though Brett, thats why every other manufacturer who makes tablets have sold over 3 million in a few months... Oh wait no they haven't.

I'm desperate to get one but don't have £500 laying around!
The adobe drawing program on it is fantastic! and is the main reason i would use it!
I am an apple fanboy but thats purely because i enjoy the user experience of apple products and the superior design and build quality!
If it had a forward facing webcam then i think i would have brought one by now but i can help but wait for the next version next year!

When they were comparing them on the gadget show(e-reader and ipad and another) Jon took them to Barbados to test them in the sun, iPad came out on top in terms of seeing the screen in direct light.

Have had an iPad since UK release not a revolutionary product (no multi task, yet!). Great for travel on a plane etc. Beyond that the battery life is amazing.

For me it's a laugh and something to do when it kicks off. I love a good internet debate.
EDIT: 360 FTW BTW

I think it would depend how you sat outside. The screen has the same kind of reflectivity as the iPhone so if you can read on one, you can read on the other.
As for the 'not the first tablet' I'd like to see someone post me a link to something already available of the same style of the iPad which could have been bought previously.
Tablets of the past have been shocking hence a complete lack of market sales.

really?
its pretty obvious to see even if you dont agree with what the message is saying.
the sheep dont want something till apple tell them?
take for instance smart phones, they have been avalible for years, i remember only being able to get 02 XDA devices through the business section of the company, untill apples very clever marketing machine popped along to tell them the iphone is revolutionary and had never been done before.
no im not anti apple btw dont buy into the hype.

Thats a slightly different situation though.
A lot of smartphones were available with horrible styluses - consumers don't want to be poking and prodding around with a silly little pen. I had an acer pda thing a few years back and though it could do bits and pieces there were no decent apps for it.
All Apple did was create something that was easier for consumers to use and marketed it at them, rather than business.

Wasn't it exactly the opposite?
