So your kids are going to be swaning around with expensive phones, top of the range clothes, expensive bikes etc. Buying kids the best so they dont get slagged off is a piss poor reason to buy things. They will then EXPECT waay too much.
Give them what the need is my opinion. The world still worked before mobiles. I didnt bother with a mobile till I was about 18 and then it was only to text multiple bints.

When they are mature enough to pay for it themselves and whe you are comfortable letting them go out without knowing exactly where they are going.
I'm 22 and didn't have a mobile till I was 16 and only had one so I could contact the rents if needed. A friend of mine who is also 22 still doesn't have one.

i don't know about everybody else but me and my friend would go down the field or woods. nobody (not saying that nobody cared) would check up on us ((via mobile) we didn't have mobile then)) and we came home at a set time, i got my first phone at 16, i'm 27 now and still on a payg mobile.

A 9 year old should not have a mobile phone is the answer to your roundabout question.

Old skool brad ....
I see kids walking around with Iphones nowa days and makes you think in the wrong neighbourhood/school it's just going to make them target's for robbery etc so i think that's somethign else you need to take into consideration, My 1st phone was when i was 11 was an ancient Motorola literally the size of a brick so i could use that as a weapon if anyone tried taking it off me

I had one of those Nokia's about 2 years ago now and I very, very nearly got refused access to a club because I 'may use it as an offensive weapon' without a word of a lie

I know from personal experience that giving a kid under the age of 16 a contract phone will result in ridiculous bills. £4000 in a year to be exact
