When my mate looked into it he was told by a few companies that they could take it to 240bhp,but other tuners in the know can get them to 250bhp.

Look for a 330ci which needs a bit of cosmetic work. Buy cheap sell cheap.
330d's are major money pits and with your budget you probably would struggle to find one worth buying.
Full BMW/Indy SH essential otherwise no one will touch it.

My mate sold his 330d for under 5k.Was a 2001 model, full Msport kit etc.Had it over a year and sold it with just shy of 100k on the clock and the only thing that he had to get replaced were the diff bushes. Was as reliable as a swiss watch.

So what? Your mate has been lucky.
Agreed they can last a life time if looked after. Unfortunately 90% of them have fallen in the hands of cheap ass people who have skipped service intervals and reset service indicators. Coupled with the worst inlet manifold design ever, which they re designed it 5 years into production due to the alarming rate of engine failures.
Trust me I have been looking into them an have taken advice from a BMW Indy I know.
Another thing with these cars are the wear an tear items which are often overlooked such as RTAB, Front wishbones and other items which often cost serious bucks.
Warren is looking for a car to bum around in and nothing is more reliable than a stright 6 Beemer. Even the diesel owners on every forum tell "newbies" to stay away unless under waranty.
I'm sure the usual BMW lot Jambo, Byron etc will agree with that.

Warren could get lucky too.
Ive heard horror stories about quite alot of cars but it still wouldnt stop me trying them out for myself.
Also had a few cars that fall into the "Internet Horror Stories" bracket and they were fine when i had them.My Pulsar's gearbox or chocolate bottom end never had any issues and my 306 Dturbo electrics were spot on.
Wont go far in life listening to horror stories all the time.Im a firm beleiver in having a good poke about a car when i go see it and if all is well,i dont see the problem.

You are missing the point here....you are taking punt with shopping cars. Taking a punt on a once 30k+ car can potentially be big bills.
Not saying its going to happen but there is a lot of naievaty when people buy into prestiege cars when they hit the bottom of the market.

I wish I had a 330d sometimes but the Millage I do doesn't justify m3 money for a same spec coupe as mine
The noise also on the straight 6 is pretty nice
warren come have a drive of mine if you. Want to see how you like it

Over here in the states fuel economy doesnt really matter but I was driving around in a 2010 mustang V6 with 15k on the clock and when it sold and I got put in a 2003 Bmw 325ci with 100k I couldnt have been happier.
Over here they usually tend to have the larger engine options but that car was really amazing, still tight as a virgin, smooth and was actually pretty decent on petrol. I have driven many beemers and yes 330ci's are noticeably faster but so is the rate at which they chew through petrol.
I cant see you going far wrong with something like a 325i which has been well maintained
The only experience I have had with the diesel range was back home in england when I drove a 118d (obviously not a 3 series) but I actually could not believe I was driving a diesel

I have a 325i Sport and a 120d at the moment; the 325 does 29.5MPG but is the touring so prob a little heavier and getting 45MPG out of the 120d. As for performance and drive there is little between them; the diesel is quicker than i expected and you dont need to change gear as much as a petrol. But then again you cant beat the sound of a 6pot petrol BMW!

depends on engines here
The 320d in e46 mode will be 150 or 163. the 163 will remap to 195 BHP
The 330d will be 184 if they are the old version or 214BHP to 231 BHP dependant on year
the 231BHop will remap to around 285 BHP
the E46 320i is a 2.2 6 cylinder

PS I owuld not like to buy a modern day BMW with no Warrenty as the majority of BMW I have come across require some work to be doen outisde the 3 year warrenty
on the 1 series I have just got rid of the adaptive lights failed on one corner due to water ingress on the wiring
Cost to replace one headlight unit was £1650+VAT
However they are great cars

I've owned my 535D (E60), 270bhp twin turbo for around 2 months now and im very pleased with mine.
If driven sensibly it will do almost 40mpg or like an idiot 20mpg.
My previous car was a BMW and I really rate them, rock solid bullit proof.
For the forseable future I would only consider a BMW / Audi.
