It's for leased cars really. If you have a leased car, you have the v5 but it technically isn't yours.

I guess an invoice. I have an invoice/sales receipt for my Punto

But that is like saying if I sold it, retained the invoice, but my name isn't on the V5C, I still own the car. Just not the registered keeper

Whenever You sell a car you give the buyer a receipt saying sold as seen and you both sign it/date it. The end. As long as the Feds can find the driver/keeper when you've done something wrong they don't care.
