Not always, can take a while for the EML to actually come on. Blank it off imo.

Could be low compression, ie oil getting past the rings oiling up the plugs.

My 1st GSi did this when i bought it, i gave it a service and changed the rocker gasket as it was causing the plug holes to fill up with oil and drowning the leads, its a pain in the arse getting the oil out of the holes though, i did my best then let the rest drop into the block. Smoked like fuck on start up but after that it was fine. I replaced the plugs and leads btw.
