i've never claimed to know anything about linux, if you read from the start, i was asking for help, and haven't had a go at anyone, so how am i kopping out?

also, i aint doubting you abilities with hardware or software etc etc, thats why i'm asking for help and advice. why is it so difficult to get advice without a thread turning into an argument??

yeah cdcool, i wasnt attacking you in anyway, just the people giving out false advice. Anyway you can run windows games/applications on linux, using a program called Wine, which does windows emulation. Its pretty smart stuff but the games are limited at the moment, few games to mention are command and conquer, half life. If you want to run any games, windows is the way.

Dunno why people are giving me all this twat talk just cause they were wrong :/

just stick with windows, then for what small advantage a single standard user could get from linux, install VMWare and install linux on a virtual drive.

depends really, if you really like the way things run in Linux but need a certain application such as Macromedia's Dreamweaver, instead of rebooting into Windows whatever, you can emulate windows and run it on the linux box.

something different, also, IT guy at my uni always chirps on bout how much he prefers it, kinda want to explore and get to know it and decide for myself.

dont get me wrong, windows is good, but i just get bored of the same old thing, want to try something a bit different and learn i guess

Yeah.

Linux is good, but not better than Windows.

Kinda defeats the point of running Linux if you run windows Emulation on it.

I recommend dual booting Linux and Windows XP to be honest.

yeah VMware is a good choice to go! But if you are just doing it cause people are saying its more powerful etc, then dont, if you dont need linux, dont bother!

cdcool, what windows operating system are you running at the moment, have you tried 2000 professional? if you are use to 98/ME/XP then 2k is a nice step up.

thats what i'm trying to do, and what the original point in the thread was about. so i can generally get the taste of linux, and also keep XP for everyday use
