I brim the tank every time and reset the trip counter.
Next time i fill up i can make a note of how many litres i've put in to how many miles i have travelled and work out an accurate fuel consumption.
Can spot any running issues with your car easier this way.

I'm not sure people go miles out of their way put petrol in. Most petrol stations are on the roads people use when going somewhere anyway.

yes..... but if you fill up say 6 times over 1 there is 5 more small journeys.....

More fuel is also used slowing down, and pulling away for example.

There is NO way around it.... you WILL use more fuel visiting the pump 5, 6, 7 (i'd have to go about 11 times to do £10 at a time ) compared to 1!

also driving with the tank empty all of the time means you are using all of the shit that collects at the bottom.

Last time I checked, a car had a fuel filter to filter the "said shit" out of the sealed petrol tank

So your filter gets clogged quicker and when you put fuel into the "sealed" petrol tank where does it come from...

Especially in a diesel. Driving with a partially empty tank increases the chance of condensation forming in the tank and water collecting in the fuel hence why you have a water trap in your filter.

She used to have an A169 A class, now she's knocking around in a Ford KA, she goes to work 3 times a week just up the road and sainsburys once a week. Uses my Dad's car the rest of the time

She probably does 200 miles a month maximum in her car.

How much does everyone else use a month? I tend to do 3 tanks of around 450-500 miles, £50-£55 a time maybe?

After checking the company credit card bill when it came through the other week every payment on mine was at a petrol station. Once I filled up for someone else so when I took that off it was just over £600 for me. Worked that out to be approx 2600 miles, don't tell our Phil tho, it was all in his car and that's possibly more than he's drove it

Was a tank per fortnight - £55 for 500 miles.

Since I started walking to work I've not filled it up. 4 weeks, still got half a tank

I use about £30 a week, if I filled it up I'd be more inclined to thrash it, so £30 gets me about 150 miles.

I do a tank a week usually, but I only use it at weekends. That's about £60.

my mum ran her freelander diesel dry a couple years ago, ended up costing my dad 2k because she didn't want to fill up until the fuel was low

something to do with the diesel pump and some other expensive land rover bits.

Sadly, this is true
I remember being a college and £10 of petrol was quite a bit

£150 from the 1.4 per month

Theoretically the less fuel you have, the better the MPG as you're carrying less weight. This is ever so slight. Think about however x number of 2 litre Coke bottles in the back which equals the tank.

I just brim it every time I fill up, reset the trip and work out MPG. As said, massive drop in MPG could see problems wrong with car.
