also the concrete sarcarphagus is now crumbling and could leak nuclear materials into underground natural water reservoirs and poison the water supplies for a lot of europe

On a programme I watched the other week, irc they said it was only made to last 20years so they could do something more permanent, and still haven't, 20years was a couple of years back now wasn't it, so on borrowed time.
Also the metal structure they built over it to protect it is knackered.,

Interesting read, two of my workmates are going there in march.
There are a few bits in the story that i dont agree with, there isnt any sort of protective suit out there that will prtect you from radiation, external and internal contamination yes but radiation no. Also the 'Magic woods' wouldnt have glown red or any other colour.
The building surrounding the reactor is also constructed out of the wrong materials.
I have been in much higher radioactive areas than what you will be allowed to access at chernobyl so the radiation side of things doesnt bother me, its the contamination that would bother me more, if you inhaled a tiny piece of plutonium smaller than a grain of salt, its enough to fuck your bones up.

i dont think radiation is dangerous unless you get prolonged exposure

I have worked as a health physic on a nuclear power station for just under a year, my job at the moment is to clean and repair the tanks that discharge the waste to sea, they are screaming with radiation, i worked in one for about 4 hours and got a dose of 190 microSieverts.
An average Chest X-Ray gives you 250 microSieverts.
People freak out about radiation so much when they really dont need to.

No its completely undetectable, unless its in serious amounts it can burn, but by that time you would have taken too much of a dose and would die withing a couple of weeks.

Thats by far the biggest disappointment with working with radiation i've always wanted active areas to be lit with green tinted lights or something just for a bit of atmosphere.

Radium is the only Radioactive substance that glows (What the hands on old watches were panted with) You wont find Radium near a Nuclear Reactor.

Chernobyls a bit mental when you think about it, not sure i'd go, I dont like the idea of radiation!!
I get to use a geiger counter at work to check for lsa scale when breaking containment or NORM's when dumping sand overboard, anything 2 counts over background has to be bagged & sent away for special disposal.

Same her Colin, nothing is allowed off site untill it has been monitored for radiation, a single count above background and it has to be disposed of as active waste or incinirated (sp)
