If you have to ask then you shouldnt buy!
The cost of fuel will be the very least of your worries.

Servicing, tyres and brakes are the most expensive things.

Nonsense. Educating yourself o predicted furl costs would allow him to budget accordingly.

My mate sold his as he massively under estimated the running costs. At the time he sold it it needed 4 tyres, brakes and a service totaling nearly £3k.
He said it started doing his head in having to factor the cost of fuel into doing everything. Like him and his mrs would go out for a meal, he have to factor in the £15 it would cost him just to get there and back.

I suppose it depends on your point of view.. If I have a car I like to know I've got enough wodge to replace any component when I break it (engine, drive train etc.)..

That's not a bad perspective but I know the rough mileage I do so I would calculate how much I would use etc. Like stu said if I worked 100miles away I would have sold the M3.
Depends how you use it I guess. Wouldn't like to replace a gearbox or an engine on one

Lets be honest an M3 is a super-saloon, its not really intended to be a commuter, if you buy it to waft about in its just a waste.
You should buy it because its an awesome piece of engineering hence why all the bits are fortunes

Mine was a delight to own but I wouldnt want to get hit by a big bill for one!!
Pretty much cost me nothing to run in 18 months of ownership, however cost the warranty co over a grand & I got a free £1k service. Only lost about a grand in depreciation as well.
SMG gearbox is fantastic, again if it breaks it can cost £k's!!
Fuel consuption was a lot better than the FRS which replaced it. Say 32mpg on a run once, 22-23 around town was normal.
Look out for cracked rear subframes on older cars which if left untreated can migrate to the boot floor costing £5k+ to put right.

I didnt think they were too bad on tyres & I attacked mine with much beefy right hoof, that said the standard fit PS2's are about £350 each for the rears!!
