True, they both look dated, but then they are both over 10 years old designs.

Depends what floats your boat, with £10K you can get something newer but not as good or something older but better.

I personally would be looking for something that will hold it value well, is less than 3 years old, maybe some warranty, less than 35k miles and with the cost of petrol rising over the coming years, something sensible.

M3 -Just for the look and the noise. Vxr's are nice but they're meant to be shit for putting the power down.

If the M3 is your top choice then no point looking elsewhere. 10k will get you a half decent one, just have to keep looking.

Hope it's not the one you posted in the link though

M3 is 10k for a 10 year old BMW, what does 10k get you VXR wise, 3 years old?

I know what one I wouldn't be getting, especially if I had a past with dodgy M3's.

m3 does look a bit dated now and is common as chips, if its not a daily driver you need then why not get something different and a bit more raw.

similar choices as to what i had and went for the vxr due to it being
1. not bright orange and a ford
2. parts can be had quite a bit cheaper than BMW's if things go tits up, easy enough to get more power out of without spending loads

I would go m3 of its in the mix. However it will be a lot older, extend the budget perhaps? If not vxr and focus are the same car really both respond well to nods 300hp both easily achievable. I would have said vxr in the sat but having owned a Ford and a vxr gearbox issues (hyped up or not)

TBF Having looked into the gearbox problem, it seems that its usually on highly tuned ones and ones that have been previously owned by an 'Enthusiastic' driver.

The one i am going to view tomorrow the chap has owned it from new with FVSH and he must be about 45-59 yrs old. Its in factory condition, even the rear tyres.

VXR has expensive fuel and expensive tyres, wont be cheap to insure etc. Only advantage is age IMO.

My M3 was 8/9years old when i sold it and was in excellent codition as it had been looked after. They weather well.

///M3, think £10k would get you a fairly decent one

mike im in exactly the same predicament with exactly the same car choices........ from what ive seen the vxr gearbox problem seems always to be highly strung models or guys who seem think there car is invincible...... just like you said look at the problem with weak turbo's on the gsi ive not had to change my turbo im on 70k now boost fine uses no oil and no coloured smoke from the rear reason du du derrrrrrrrr i warm up and cool down and service regular simple really........

i think i will end up with a vxr purely cos i think low mileage and year will grab me in the end..... love 330 ci's but like you say i will regret not buying an m3...

i have 10k to spend but im contemplating selling my corsa xe which i could get 2k if i split maybe which would give me 12-12.5k to spend on a m3 but who knows lol

trouble is i not keen on japanese cars either i find the interiors so drab and cheap looking almost......

one jap evo i do like though is the fq-340 evo in mettallic grey

Fuel and tires will be pretty much the same as an M3 i would imagine. i can insure a VXR for £550 and an M3 for £980

I think i'm going to test drive this VXR tomorrow and go from there. I could always sell up and change to an M3 if needs must lol.

My VXR was running 295bhp/350lbft which is a large amount to put through a standard box. However if you do buy the VXR then your kidding yourself if your gonna keep it standard the simple exhaust and airbox change along with a good map you'll be looking at 280+bhp.

Your completely right, it will be getting tuned. However, a tuned VXR that has been driven properly and a tuned VXR that has been driven by a fucktard with shit for brains is different.

I personally couldn't hand over nearly £10k for a car that had been tuned and potentially driven without any care in the world.
