Been said already... 205 gti.
Basically, things like a clio 172 will need to 'rev up' - where as 205 gti will instantly pull out of the corners with good low end torque.
ultimately I'm not sure if the aid of rwd would really be a benefit for it to warrent the mx5 and once again - it's a hill climb, you want something that can pull up the hill easily.

don't waste money on good brakes they won't even be warm by the end,
mates 106 still runs povvy spec brakes, as do alot people in hill climbing.
think you'd be in a good place with a ph1 172,
finding a decent 205 for a decent price is getting rare.

look at this 106 for example 9500rpm limit, won nearly every hillclimb

I've done hillclimbs / trials for quite a few years with Hamish. (One building the SWB Quattro)
What hill climbs are you looking at doing?
I would suggest a Pug 205, if its off road hillclimbs, jack the car up like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HmiCg8UbLU
That was on the same trial, although we were in a different class, we followed it around the Ilkley trial last year, think it cleared pretty much every stage. maybe not the type of hill climb your after.

Sorry I didn't realise they had the time / budget to invest in something like that e.g. Really close ratio dog box... hence stays in high revs constantly.
(P.S. did you know, that guy is 'LuckyB' from here - he used to have a v.quick corsa back in the day

What is wrong with instead of spending 2k on something just to enter hillclimbs keep the cash and enter the vx220 he already owns. £2k would go well towards paying entry fees and consumables etc. Without knowing a great deal about hill climb classifications i'd imagine the spec of that vx to be pretty competitive with the right driver.

My knowledge of vx220s is scant but from what I've heard parts are rather expensive.
In his scenario, have an off and really the most damage he can do is another £1k base car to fix. Wouldn't take much panel damage to get to £1k on the vx.
Don't know if its his daily driver but I don't even like taking them on trackdays. The knowledge you need to drive it to work on Monday holds you back a lot.

if i entered the vx id be put in the same class as my mates supercharged atom.. hence no point what so ever.
i am planningnon just running at harewood hillclimb, its local and just a bit of fun really, but id like to be fairly competative. there are only 3 mx5's and about a million fwd hot hatches.. im not totally against the idea of a fwd but since im sharing the car we both have to agree.
if i crashed the vx it would be about 3k for each clam so its really not an option.

I wouldn't buy an mx5 for hillclimbing, bit slow.
I'd be inclined to buy a metro, a 1.8vvc lump and some decent tyres and brakes.

Then you'd be in the sports libre class with no chance of being slightly competitive with out a large budget.

2 of my mates have just finished a project one of these they were planning on doing a ring trip in it for shits and giggles but due to other people backing out/cancelling the trip they havent gone,
theres is the older 1.8 on a dizzy setup though, but fook me its rapid and ideal for hill climb it just pins you in your seat out of every corner spinning wheels up but with some proper non budget tyres should be ace

saxo vts gets my vote, if you really put the effort in you can strip them to under 800kgs. use a vtr box with a 1.1 final drive and youve essentially got an s1 rallye box for £100-150
4-2-1 and straight through with a set of second hand cams(500 ish all in) and you'll be looking around the 145bhp mark
206 gti 266mm brakes will be around £100 and more than up to the job when youve got the weight down
ive got a mk2 vtr shell full of spares for sale for £500, ideal project

car needs to have all the interior in it, otherwise its in the race class.
i cant see no reason why i cant strip out all the sound deadening etc then replace the carpets & seats tho.
the car is going to get some serious hammering, so i want something relativly reliable.

when you say full interior do you mean so it looks like it did when it came out of the factory? or just seats and a carpet?
