Cant really be botherd to write down yet another crime reference number and hear nothing back. The fuzz is a waste of time and money for things like this!

If youve had your car keyed before, why are you asking about it? If you havent, dont assume 'the fuzz' is a waste of time. If you dont do things properly you will hinder you chance of justice. If, for example, a car down the road was keyed on the same night, they had evidence, they could claim against them, you have no arguement unless you bother to try and sort it out.

My brothers van got broken into a while back, all his tools stolen etc. Rang the police and they just gave him a number. Heard nothing back

Report it. The police dont have magical powers to solve crime. However if there has been a spate and police have someone arrested, having another victim of crime all helps towards a proper prosecution.
