If you're talking lasercutting sheet metal parts Solidworks is fantastic for that. I used to have a job designing sheet metal components and I used Solidworks for that

Brics Cad is a cheap alternative and all the commands etc are the same as Auto Cad

If you are going to learn cad you need to do it in a Units/distance/cordinate format.
