what happens to the big orange bit, do they jettison that in space? and if so,a re there hundreds of the buggers just flaoting about in orbit?

I think so Robbo, there's a hell of a lot of space debris out there in orbit!

Fortunately there's a fair bit of er.... space in space

that bit returns to earth with most of it burning up in the atmosphere. The rest falls into the ocean

The solid rocket boosters are recovered and reused, there's some cool videos of that on youtube.

The large propellant tank is designed to burn up in the atmosphere.

No, the External Tank re-enters the atmosphere, breaks up and gets dumped into the sea (usually Indian Ocean). Unlike the Solid Rocket Boosters, they aren't reused.
