Some performance cars do have drilled discs as standard. I think my brothers R8 did and seem to recall some Porsche's with them too.
Drilled discs are unlikely to crack but why take the chance and pay more for something that isn't going to perform any better than a normal vented disc?

I bought grooved discs and I will be quite happy when they wear out or need replacing. They're noisy as fuck and they have obliterated my DS2500's so quickly :-/ Only changed them a few months ago and expected hardly any wear but they've worn half the pad away, my last DS2500's lasted a year on plain discs and still had life left when I changed them. Just don't want to spend even more money on this brake setup as I could have had a big brake conversion by now the money I've spent trying different things

The TVR has drilled as standard, fair enough I think the RS6 drilled was an option (but most have them) and Im sure the M5 is standard

I have to admit my standard disc and pad set up on the golf was pretty good but once I changed them for drilled and grooved with better pads the difference is night and day.

If plain discs and just as good as uprated ones then why do touring cars/ rally cars all come drilled and grooved???

Let me guess there all wrong

that would have mostly been down to the pads, there is no way drilled and grooved discs would make any difference let alone night and day.

as said previously cars used under extreme conditions may benefit but on a road car definitely not, not even a road car that is being driven hard on the road

also with regards to some of the premium cars coming with them standard, i imagine again its marketting, just like the FRP comes with rear discs, it doesnt need them, drums are fine, but its what people expect so they are fitted

So are you saying you have never got your brakes hot/cooked on the roads before Steve?

In any case, Faz said fast road (and probably a few track days), where discs that cool quicker will be of benefit.

So are you suggesting he upgrades to ceramic discs? Seems a bit costly to me. Drilled discs do not cool better than standard vented ones.

The best/most cost effective set up for the OP will be fast road pads such as Ferodo DS2500, Mintex 1144 or Tarox Strada over standard discs.

Wanted drilled and grooved for the Pug but ended up getting Mintex vented discs with Mintex pads. They're a fair bit better than standards for my car.

No, I would not touch aftermarket drilled discs, I have seen too many crack.

I would suggest standard discs which have been grooved along with some better pad, braided lines and good/5.1 fluid.

I wouldn't have even considered an RS6 or M5 unless the discs had been drilled and Im not talking just the fronts either, oh no........front and rear!
