Mate of mine had a MK4 Golf GTI turbo which was rebuilt (by VW) and mapped up to 300bhp... 2 weeks later it blew up He also took me out in it and it was slower than my ep3

Possibly,

I've heard so many bad things about those engines it has put me off (although I'd consider a stage 1 s3 ).

Unless it has had some big work then 280-290 is pretty much max on standard internals

Typical internet tbh Look around and you'll find bad stories about any car, yet some people take those couple of ill-informed people's views and tarnish the entire fleet with the same stories.

Yep, couldn't agree more... my torqueless vtec has more torque than a redtop and has to hit the limiter in every gear to get it to move

I only base my comments on experience and common views of people who have experience and then finally the internet related stories...

Mines on 126k with a 190bhp remap turbo intake pipe, exhaust, dv, n75 and had the boost up abit more so prob pushin towards 200 had it a year now and only problem ive had is the coolant temp sensor which is a common fault on all vw's from 98 - 2004 gget about 28 round town and 40 ish on the mway. Mines still on the origional turbo but did have a top end rebuild due to the oil pump failing at 96k

My Passat 1.8T never missed a beat, never had any engine related problems in the 15000 or so miles i owned it.

I sold it on 162000 miles over year ago now, still see it driving around and the new owner has also had zero problems with it

The comment about 150/180s being problematic is total bullshit. Also some 150s have ko3s too, mine was a aum and did.

Also theres no way your civic was faster if it had 300... For that power your looking at atleast a k04 hybrid and thats still pushing... My 225bhp golf was faster than my standard ctr

People on here buy shit cars, then get problems, then blame it on the whole marque instead of admitting they've bought a crap car.

To be hitting 300bhp in a Golf, it would need k04 hybrid internals on the turbo, FMIC, full exhaust with decat, better flowing inlet mani, decent air intake, silicone tip, water meth, bigger injectors, bigger maf, better fuel pump, 4bar FPR
