That's what I've found too. I think that Vauxhall have some great designs but they just don't make gearboxes that are any good. I've owned quite a few Vauxhalls, and the biggest letdown was a Calibra 16v - I was expecting quite a lot from it but it just didn't steer, change gear or handle anywhere near as good as the Rover GTi I had before it.
The Mondeo I have now does all of this stuff much better than I could have expected; it handles superbly, but I'm not overly keen on the build-quality.
When I get my next car I will try out what Vauxhall and Ford have to offer, but probably end up with Mini Clubman instead...

BTW, glad there's a bit of a debate going on now.

pointless posting on a vauhall forum though as people will just say ford are shit rust buckets which drive shit, even though they've never driven one and just go on what their mates dad who is the head steward said.

I forgot to say in my original post...
Once upon a time I used to have a V6 Calibra. Although it was a nice comfortable car it was a pile of shite, literally *everything* was failing on it.
I share a V6 Ford Cougar with my other half, and despite it's current sump gasket/atx sump gasket issues, it's a much better built car IMO and more refined.
The only newish Vauxhalls and Fords I've ever driven was a Vectra C SRi and Elegance, and a Mondeo mk4 which was very spaceship-like...

Modern Fords are so mundane and uninspiring, plus Ford have not sold anything like the Monaro or VXR8 or even VX220, so I think Vauxhall wins hands down.
Those at Ford responsible for well over a decade of tepid, boring, front wheel drive shite, ought to be dragged into a room and beaten with bats that have been laminated with images of GT40s, Capris, RS200s, (proper)Escorts, Mustangs, Lotus Cortinas, etc etc etc.

Styling is of course subjective, but Fords over the past 10 years or so have been fantastic driver's cars - class-leaders in fact. Front-wheel drive maybe, but so are Vauxhalls - the VX and the Monaro aren't typical cars, just like the GT40 isn't...
Personally, I don't like to judge a car until I've driven it; and I've driven a lot of cars.

Yes vauxhall made some fantastic cars but you need to remember they almost went bust (gm). Ford didnt because they were sensible and over the next decade i can see them building some brilliant cars. Same goes for vauxhall also.

FWD drivers car is only a money saving excerside.
Plus the French are far better at it.
I agree with Jim.

i agree, but ford as a brand are known for decent value cars for the family.
a mum on the school run in her fiesta/focus isn't going to go exploring the limits of fwd grip doing 30 in a residential area is she?
i do hope that ford come back to rwd/4wd one day, although most of what happens nowadays is because of stupid EU rulings more than the manufacturer being tight.
if you saw the shit we have to change constantly on the engines in our work you'd understand.
you'd think 70mpg was enough to satisfy most people, but no, the fat cat politicians want more.

My dad's had alot of Ford's with no problems and only one Vauxhall, also with no problems but I think theres more nice Vauxhalls around than Ford's so my vote is Vauxhall.

So have I.
Modern Fords are essentially tampons.
Something functional that one is obliged to buy.
Just because it's comfortable, doesn't mean you have to buy it or presume it's any good because someone says you ought to.
I genuinely can't think of a single example of a 'fantastic driver's car' from Ford from the past ten years. Just a sea of mediocrity.
