Yes, it will be unless you configure the com port, as said.
Go on device manager, com ports, find the USB dongle thing listed, click on it, then in the options somewhere it'll let you set the com port, then you need to mirror that on the software settings.

Trying the com ports isnt just trying the usb slots.
you can have multiple com port numbers assigned on the computer. Were there no instructions with your cable?
My vag-com was plug and play.
my inpa/ncsexpert cable for Bimmers etc i had to configure a few things for it to work, this is probably what you have to do.

This is the instructions...
1. Please install the VCP (virtual com port) drivers buy double clicking the red 'CDM20802_Setup' icon. This will only take a few seconds.
2. Please then install 'pcmscan 2.4.8.0', and register with the licence details supplied. When you get to the registration section enter your name and organisation (!!organisation must be entered!! - you can put your car make or nickname). Then enter the details exactly including the [ ] and the hyphen. Choose 'Generic OBD -II' as the vehicle profile when you start the program. If you cannot see an icon to start the program (little red car) it can be found in My Computer / C / Program Files / PCMSCAN
Please note the software will not see the interface until it's connected to the car. The interface will show one red LED when plugged into your laptop, this is only to confirm that unit is ready to be plugged into your OBD2 socket.
Any problems please call or email me.
Many thanks

shouldnt need engine running to communicate, but better to have it running when its all communicating ok.
look in the scan software for anything that lets you change com ports, theres usually about 8 different com ports to select

You're an OBD cable short of a diagnostic mate.

Hardware is good, cheap and it works. Software is a nightmare... No instructions and damned near impossible to set up. Having said that it does work when you eventually get it sorted. So for anyone considering this gadget... Instructions... Copy the software to a folder on your desktop (windows) then plug in the USB and load the drivers from USB Driver\WHQL Certified Driver. You will need to do this twice because it needs 2 drivers. (YOU WILL BE PROMPTED BY WINDOWS TO DO THIS) Then you are ready to load the software (All Of It) all of it because it does not all work. Now plug the OBD connector into the car and turn on the ignition. Finally try out the programs (All Of Them). If you get the error/message interface not found/not connected it's a probably a COM port connection problem. You have to try out every single port until you find the one the interface is sitting on. (YOU HAVE TO MANUALLY SET THE PORT NUMBER AND BAUD RATE TO GET A CONNECTION) I hope this helps someone
