Look at his received files and downloads, check for pics on his computer. If it's more than searching then do what you feel is the right thing.

Personally. I'd get him the help he needs, not the kicking you want to give him. It's not his fault he's got these thoughts, and no matter how hard you kick you won't kick it out of his system. Get him help.

Help will involve a trip to the Police station and him being on the sex offenders register if anything is found on his PC, which will be taken by the police when they search his home.

There's no self help groups for paedophiles like alcoholics anonymous.

In regards to evidence, the police can obtain a court warrant and will then have access to his web history from his ISP, whether he deleted it from his PC or not.

But even if they find nothing, it still may well ruin his life

Is he really your mate? Doesn't sound like a friendly thing to do. I would have a sit down with my mates and just go through it all, they would probably shit it and never look again.
