To the OP, have you budgeted for running costs/maintenance & remedial Work?

You are looking at 10 year + old hot hatches for circa a grand in which 90% would have spent their lives being given death. Expecially towards the end when they have become cheaper and found their way into the hands of less shall we say 'Savoury' Owners.

Surely you are not expecting to just have the initial outlay for a grand then trouble free motoring?

Punto GTs are really nice but I wouldn't trust one. I had nothing but problems from my 1.2 S, sold it with 69k on the clock and it hasn't been taxed since May.

Your level of comfort must be alot lower than mine then,

IMO Saxo's have 0 level of comfort. It kinda says it all when you realise that you need to lift the carpets to get to the bottom arm bolts.

I have looked at them and they seem quite cheap, ideally prefer something smaller. Are they quick for the size?

About 115bhp.

You could get a much better hot hatch for the same price as a decent condition (as in not rusty) Escrote GTi.

After searching for another day I'm going to save abit more and go for either a ve polo gti or a Renault Clio 182.

A Polo GTi? Good cars, but by no means a hot hatch Warm at best.

Really? They seem quite cheap and thought with them being 1.6T they would be quick. Are the 172&182 the beat options?

They aren't 1.6t, just 1.6 16v 125bhp but quite heavy wee cars.

They are nice looking tbh but not all that quick.
They aren't that cheap either.

Cheap on eBay. The clio's seem to be the front runners.

As Nik said, they are 125bhp but they aren't as light as the opposition in that power range, so aren't really up there as a hot hatch. A 172 would be my bet. I prefer the older 172 without the TS etc, and they are far cheaper. Loved my mate's old one. The backbox fell off and it felt quicker
