ive got 1.6 on tb's and ive got a 2ltr turbo, and the 1.6on tb's will def be more reliable and driveable, you have to spend a lot on a turbo to get it right and reliable, also on a 1.6 engine it would hardly be worth having for the money and the problems it could cause in the future, ie turbo problems, pistons, head gaskets, theres an awful lot that can go wrong due to cooling, unless loads of £ is spent na on smaller engines is def the way to go

turbos do sound wicked spooling up and so does a dv, but then again when throttle bodies are roaring at 6k upwards they sound just as good i know this from havin both, and both get noticed

Luke Thomas has a 1.6 16v Turbo that he bought from Courtnay for £3000 i think. Got a Mantzel box fitted. Spec was just the exhaust, turbo, mantzel box n dump valve Put in some poor times, but i went out in it and it was pretty bloody rapid!!
But
Its not reliable. Everyone who i've spoken to about turboing these engines (16v) has had problems all the time.
A 1.6 16v on TB wont have as much torque as a turbo unit, but as said, is sooooooo much more reliable, and sounds sooooooooo much better than a dump valve. Not many people run the turbos up to 13psi + (usual is about 6-7psi) and dont get that big a dump.
Given the chance to spend £3500 on a Courtney triple head gasket bodge job and 150bhp, or say £2500 on TB, fitted, setup, with a few other bits n bobs, i'd have the TB anyday. Turbo just isn't reliable enuff.

Mega mega bucks.
But then if ur gonna do that, u might as well just a very high performance 180bhp odd TB engine.
Rev higher, sound better, fuel would be better, more reliable, and the trumpets look great
Turbos are pretty hidden behined the actuator and downpipe.

im torn between which looks best, a tb engine with nice big trumpets, and huuuge filter or a turbo one with charge cooler, big intercooler, all the coloured hoses and shiny bits,
then again a turbo can look pretty good when youve just been on a thrash and its still glowing its just the kick of a turbo and how much it pulls in every gear even 6th upto 160+ that i love, but then again the corsa is raw power and the revving up off the clock is brilliant,

If your gonna go turbo id go for a 2.0 cally engine, as its going to be more reliable, easier to get bits for, more tunable, and cheaper than putting in a 1.6, and then turboing it.
At the end of the day though i think your doing it the wrong way around. If you dont have a 1.4/1.6 16v already then just go for a 2.0, but if you already have one then modify that.

Yeah I think the main reason is I could drop a 1.6 in now and insure it. Then I could do the tb's or turbo next year. Just eager to drop out the 1.2
I would have been fine for a 2.0 if i didn't have a claim 3 year ago -- got a great preliminary quote and then my claim (3 bloody years ago) meant they wouldn't insure me... Grrrrrrr

Well would have thought they wouldn't be too much 2nd hand as people drop them out to fit 2.0's and 2.0's cost like £400 - £450....
Depends on mileage but I haven't really looked into it... just a thought today really...

I've been thinking about a 1.6 conversion in the future - ie a years time.
when I was working on work placement the 1.2 just doesn't move.
Thanks for the reply Tim.
How much are throttle bodies to buy and have fitted?
Can you buy 2.0's and 1.6's new from vauxhall?

Well there welcome to my old one!
Is it possible to get a really new low mileage 1.6 donor engine? My current mileage is just ver 35k an don't want a big upwards jump.
How much are TB's?
