My dad has a mk4 with the PD130 engine and that returns around 48-51mpg. Has never seen 60mpg.

I wouldn't bother with the golf and bora, compaired to small diesels like clio Dci they are expensive, group 13 insurance and tax band E and F (£115-£130)
Where as small diesels are group 7-9 and tax band B and C (£20-£30).
Brand new the golf Tdi 1.9 mk4 is rated for 56mpg.

It might do 60 mpg sat behind a lorry 'all day long', but not in the real world of mixed traffic, town, motorway etc.
A general 50 mpg is not that easy with that sort of driving in a 10 year old + design engine. BMW are only just hitting 50+ in real, everyday driving.

yeah, thanks for the heads up. im going to stick with the small ones i think. i dont want a small diesel purely out of choice. its just to save me money until insurance comes down on cars i actually want and gives me time to save money for one in the next year or two
