I wanted an R26 aswell and make it into an R26-R lookalike as the R-26R's are quite frankly ridiculous money still for less car than the R26.

I would have that over an Astra VXR.

Can only go by my mates experiences of Astra VXR's and they've had no problems regarding reliability like gearboxes, it's just luck of the draw like most cars.

When I was looking into buying my car there are plenty of horror stories about vanos/subframe cracks/rarb bushes but you just look around the car before buying, every car is going to be a risk you just try and reduce those risks by having a proper look around it.

come off it, even you with you vauxhall specs cant defend this one, they are two such weak counter arguments, a sensor compared to a gearbox rebuild lol?

i think the astra vxr as a whole is a good car, but the gearboxes are shocking and you should budget to expect it not to last 50k, which by any standards is crap

I always take problems with cars with a pinch of salt on the internet anyway. You will only ever hear about problems online, you don't get people posting topics to say they've had their Astra 3 years ragged it to fuck, tracked it etc and nothing has gone wrong.

Yes but on a Corsa forum there have been about 4 cases of failed gearboxes?

That is an awful lot.

R26 are cheap, i didnt buy one because i knew if i paid £13k for it it would be worth 5p 10minutes later. Stupid depreciating French cars

golf gti's are the slowest of the lot yet you base your argument on sensor issues? also, the focus has fantastic mid range performance as standard and haa a much better chassis than the astra.

i'd personally have either as they're both as good as eachother, although the golf and focus have much better interiors.

I'd say they can't get much cheaper tbh mate, maybe 1k-2k over a year now. Probably never a better time to buy one! I'd buy one and strip the fuck out of it and track it, but that's me

I like my Astra vxr, had it for about 2 months now, the gearbox was replaced 6 months ago. The keyless entry has let me down as the battery went flat in the key so couldnt really turn the car off. Over all Im really happy with it, doesnt cost me no more a week on fuel compared to my old astra 1.7cdti and the vxr still gets 37 mpg on the motorway.

I get irritated when people defend stuff just because they like it.

Yes I appreciate people have a passion for particular makes, but you can still priase something yet remain partial to its flaws, no car is perfect, and the vxr is a good car but does suffer from unusally high cases of gearbox failure.

I like 106 gtis, and will always priase them but will still advise anyone to watch out for gearbox problems if they are seeking advise, in a way, owners are some of the worst people to ask advice from because a lot of the time there passion and bias clouds there judgement

Nah just jokes mate. Agree with what you say, like when people say head gaskets aren't common on rovers coz they did 10k in one with no issues.
