You do know that just because you're basing it on fact doesn't mean it's not offensive to make that association.

If you do something, particularly in a position that she's in then she should resign. An apology wont do as (like you previously mentioned) a precedent is set. If a White MP said something like that about Black people, a fair few people would be calling for a resignation.

This one??

"Now if I said blacks are only good for digging because they used to do that in the 19th century, that wouldn't be acceptable.

She should resign because we've heard for decades now how anyone who makes generalisations about race is actually the devil and should die in a fire, so the precedent is set."

Slightly over the top lol, but in terms of the point your making, yeah... its true! The precedent is set, so abide them, else face the same consequence

Cant set rules and then not follow them

yea ian, reading back i realise that so have deleted..

werent meant in an offensive way..

was meant to come accross more like..

she has found a lot of white people to make divisions such as black leaders ect

i agree because what she says is true

if its true its not really rascist imo

although she shouldve said:

"a lot of people like to divide and conqour based on race"

And do you think the rules are proportionate?

ie. she can just apologise and its fine - ie. I'm not actually offended by her really and I personally don't think she should resign really, people do worse.

I can see that she meant don't do what white people did in the 19th century, even out of context I made that link.

My point is that we've got a race situation there where you can't say things like that - which itself is an out of touch point of view.

That wasn't her point though, she was making a specific historic reference to an event which actually took place.

Interesting to see who can have a debate or who just wants to make stereotype references.

because i dont get offended by things i dont expect other people to be easily offended, this is my down fall in threads like this and the dead body one..

in the sense of a debate i probably dont know enough about the subject of racism and what is/isnt acceptable nowadays to take part with any credibility

The comment didn't bother me at all. Why should it? It wasn't about me, wasn't aimed at me and I take no offence from it.

However, whenever race issues occur we always hear about equality, so if a public figure is made to resign for a poor taste comment about blacks/Asians or whatever, the same rules have to apply in this case.

The thing is in the past people like Ron Atkinson and Jim Bowen, people from another era so to speak, have lost there careers over improper use of a single word, without actually being proven to be racist. In this case though it is a woman well versed on racial issues who knew exactly what she was saying, I think that is more serious than an old bloke using old terminology.
