I hadn't seen that before but it looks like Apple confirgure TRIM support, wikipedia says if you reinstall the OS it is switched off again.

I thought the TRIM 'issue' was under Lion only? But you can enable TRIM support via terminal anyways; decent guide here - http://digitaldj.net/2011/07/21/trim-enabler-for-lion/

I think I have fallen in love with the Air over the pro. I am just concerned that the processor will struggle with PS :-/

The advertised clock speed is just an average - the i7 will go up to 2.2Ghz, I'm not sure what the i5 will go up to. Either way, i5's and i7's are damn good processors. I had the same concerns before I bought mine, it just doesn't seem that powerful on paper but in reality so far so good.

How much do you think you'll be selling the iPad for?
Think someone's posted the link to the edu store - use that for 18% discount.

Would you have the same issues with trim on an iMac? I've noticed Apple want £400 for a 256GB SSD, but you can buy one for half that now. I'd be storing my files on a NAS if I bought an iMac so don't really need a 1TB mechanical HDD.

Then again, you can spend over £400 for a decent SSD. Just weighing up a hypothetical situation.

Well the iPad is sold so as of pay day I will have the funds to buy it
If I buy through the edu store then I get 3 years warranty rather than the standard 1 year?
Are they likely to question the order if I buy it on a non ac.uk email address or IP?

Is it worth having the extra 2 years cover?

If your spending £1500 on a laptop then i definitely would recommend it. A new charger costs more than the apple care...

Sorry to keep bumping this...
I just read this in the Apple store when trying to buy it.
"Every new Mac purchased from the Apple Store for Higher Education comes with complimentary telephone technical support for one year from your Mac purchase date and three years of repair coverage. With the AppleCare Protection Plan Uplift (AdditionalTelephone Technical Support), you can extend your telephone technical support to three years from the computer's purchase date. You can call Apple's award-winning experts as often as you like and get your questions answered."
So does that mean I get the full 3 years of hardware cover at no additional cost? Paying the extra £50 only gets me an extra two years of telephone support?

Imagine how good their products could be if they had CS feedback during the design process.

The disk Apple use isn't a "decent" SSD though. They use the cheapest possible Toshiba drives which do not nearly match the performance of the more popular models.
Either way, you can just use the TRIM hack posted above for an iMac. I did it on my MBP and it worked a treat. No noticeable difference, but i guess that's part of the point...
