we have collection bags down here that we throw all our burnt toast into and they all get shipped up to scotland, packaged up with a sticker on the front "scotch evening loaf" £1.50

yeah but its the number inbetween that are ambiguous, obivously 9 would mean black and 0 means white, but what does 7 mean? on some toasters with a scale 0-9 i stick it halfway expecting that to be lightly burnt, and it comes out nearly black

Surely that depends on what bread you use too.
You'd need a separate scale on the bread that matched to the colours on your toaster, which means you might as well just have numbers.

Temperature of the incoming bread matters as well, mine is configured to cook from frozen.

You'd need a separate scale on the bread that matched to the colours on your toaster, which means you might as well just have numbers.
you would also need a setting to select if the person toasting the bread is of black or white origin

My toaster apparently has the below functions.
It's mainly used for waffles.
Peek & Pop® function- check bread when toasting
High gloss finish, in black, cream & red
Bagel button for toasting buns/bagels (toasts one side and warms the other)
Defrost button for toasting frozen bread
High wattage for faster toasting, with accurate browning control
Easy to clean with high quality stainless steel cover
High lift mechanism to remove small items easily
Extra wide 36mm slots to accommodate larger items
Concealed, removable crumb tray

Think it may have a bagel mode, not sure, never used it.

John - Good toasters, although not sure the £70-80 price tag is worth it. Saying that, they have some that are around the £150-180 mark

What gets me are those catering style ones where it's a conveyor belt configuration. people are always pissing around with the belt speed setting so when you put your own bread through you end up trying to watch it go through and gauge how well it's doing on the way. I hate it when it's only haf way throgh and you can see it's perfect then have to crank the speed up and it comes out burnt
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.
